The live version of "Space Truckin" on Made In Japan is also one of his more masterful works.
He was also in an early version of Whitesnake, before it became all about David Coverdale's hairdo. They put out some very good, very blues-influenced albums with Lord on keyboards and Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden on guitar.

Deep Purple might have been the most self-indulgent band ever, but the version with Ian Gillan flat out rocked and had a tremendous influence on the hard rock genre that came later.
