Thanks everyone. I think the last time I logged in Matt Adams was playing left field for some reason. Looks like we survived another Cubs dynasty, though. I think that’s the third one in the last 16 years.

Yes, Maddon whined when he was in Tampa. He was constantly butting heads with the Yankees and Red Sox and had a feud with the Tigers at one point. He's as paranoid as La Russa, but he's a good quote and friendly with reporters, so he doesn't get raked over the coals like La Russa. La Russa was just too aloof and intense to pull that off and still be well-liked.

When this team is eight games out of the wild card race on July 31, I hope Lynn and Rosenthal are pitching as well as they did tonight. There are going to be desperate teams looking for arms and the Cardinals could make serious hay.

So I haven't been watching, but I see the new and improved defense has 3 errors, Peralta is 0 for 3 and Piscotty isn't playing.
I asked why this relatively unchanged team would be better than last year's version. It appears we're on track to be below .500 at home.
Weird isn't it? I'm so confused how a team that brought back 90 percent of its position players looks exactly the same.
I'm not sure if I said it here, but I was in favor of the Fowler signing as long as the Cardinals understood they needed more. Apparently not.

This is a guy the Cardinals believed two years ago wasn't good enough to play ahead of Pete Kozma and would've been in Memphis to start 2016 if Ruben Tejada didn't get hurt the last week of spring training. Then he got demoted two weeks later for Tejada.

Wonder if Matheny will just play Gyorko at third base every day now?
Every time Peralta fails I'm going to issue a daily reminder that the Cardinals weren't interested in Justin Turner because they thought Peralta was just as good.

The new and improved Wacha lasted three innings. Do NOT send him out for the top of the fifth.
He's going to. I've been on the phone but it looked like he was cruising through those first three innings and came undone in the fourth. He's not a starter.
And now he drives in a run. Shows what I know.

The good thing about Siegrist is he can pitch equally well to lefties and righties.

I think there's a very good chance this is a 78-win team. I'm prone to overreaction and losing to the Reds with a rookie isn't helping, but I'm not seeing anything to indicate that they are any good.

Matheny did not put his team in the best position to win this game at the start. If Piscotty was fine to play, he should have been starting. This isn't freaking little league.

This would be a top of the league caliber line up if they had a real cleanup hitter. Molina got the job done this time but i dont think that any person they put in that position is going to strike fear in pitchers. With fowler, diaz and carp at the top of the line up it would be nice to have an rbi guy in the 4th spot. I think ultimately piscotty is the best fit and will end up their at the season progresses.
He should be there today. The only reason he's not is because Matheny is letting spring training stats dictate lineup decisions rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Lynnteresting how he was able to get through that situation.
It sure would be nice to have 4 and 5 hitters who can do a little damage rather than just settle for sac flies.

It probably wouldn't go over too well in the Carpenter household, but the best lineup the Cardinals could run out there (at least against RH pitching) might be a lineup with Adams at first and Carpenter at third. Peralta appears to be toast. Adams may not be an ideal cleanup hitter, but he's a better option than Peralta (or Molina).
Moving Carpenter to first was more of a front office move than an acquiesce to Carpenter. He wasn't very good over there and moving him across the diamond was the best move for the infield defense. I agree that Peralta is toast, but I think the best lineup is Gyorko at third (better than Carpenter and Peralta at defense; better than Adams and Peralta at hitting). Gyorko must wonder how to earn Matheny Bucks.
