Re: Impromptu 9:00 a.m. Press Conference

He decided before the World Series.  Might explain why he looked like he was having so much fun.

Wonder what, if any, effect this has on Pujols?  Wonder if they're going to name a replacement?

I wonder if Pujols will be more apt to stay if Oquendo is the manager?

WOW - really hard to imagine anyone else managing the Cardinals!  I sure hope they can convince Pujols to stay!  What about Dave Duncan?

"What about Dave Duncan?"

Can't imagine one without the other. I suspect Duncan stayed as long as he did because of LaRussa. On his own, Duncan probably would have stormed off because of the way Chris got treated a few years ago. His wife's convalescence is also probably a consideration.

I would think naming Oquendo manager would be best considering Pujols being a free agent.  I understand why TLR retired.  It is going to be hard to beat this team and this year.  He goes out on top.  For all the bitching that has been done about him he is going to be hard to replace.  Even though it seems perfectly logical I didnt expect it.  It will be interesting to hear about how this effects will have on the Pujols resigning.

Duncan has said he was not necessarily tied to La Russa, but with his wife's illness, he's probably gone.

I was going to say the same thing.

As far as Oquendo goes I am not really sold either.  However I would do it.  It keeps the promotion from within.  If you dont do it and keep him on the coaching staff the bitterness might return to the club.  Mostly though I think it would earn points with Pujols.

"Somebody on MLB Network Radio just uttered the name "Jim Riggleman".

It wasn't either Jim Memmolo or Rob Dribble, was it? Those guys are clueless.

From the current staff, I'd probably be OK with Pettini or Oquendo, though I really don't know too much about Pettini. Dave MacKay? Who knows? McGwire might bring too much baggage. Lilliquist is right out. He can't even use a phone properly.

"Sure hope this isnt some recycled ham & egger like Riggleman"

Think Terry Francona would be interested?

Re: Impromptu 9:00 a.m. Press Conference

Two questions - 1.  what's the relationship with Pujols & Oquendo (I missed that somehow)?  2.  What does Duncan's wife have? (illness)

Re: Impromptu 9:00 a.m. Press Conference

What about Player-manager Albert Pujols? How much was Tony making anyway, and is there significant potential Albert money in there?

Who could replace Dave Duncan too?

Pujols has always been drawn to Latin players as friends.  Molina, Lugo, Furcal, Polanco are names that come to mind.  There isnt much for me to go on other then he seems to interact with latin players more.

Duncan's wife had a brain tumor and he left the team for a month to be by her side.  He even mentioned prior to the WS that he my have to retire to stay at home with her.

That I am not sure of.  I always thought Mike Matheny should get into coaching.  However putting him in that position right off would be risky.

I don't see any way they go outside the organization. They're big on continuity.

It'll be an internal hire.

Then, IMO, it would be very disrespectful to pass up Oquendo.

Who took over for Dave Duncan while he was on leave?  Can't remember the name.  He didn't do so bad.

Re: Impromptu 9:00 a.m. Press Conference

Wow.  HUGE news.

First thought is, why not Duncan to replace Tony?  That could be the whole plan.  Leave Duncan with a winner.

Second thought is, I hope this isn't a strategy to 'come out of retirement' managing somewhere else.

There was talk of him going somewhere else so I hope you're wrong!
