That's good news.

I figured he would be back. The other spots will be interesting. I could see having Oquendo around as a bad thing if he is bitter. I assume he will be allowed back. It also sounds like Mallony is going to get a spot on the staff. I wonder if that will be as Bench Coach or bullpen coach. I could also see Dave MCcay leaving.

I heard a rumor (one of those, my buddy goes to church with someone who knows somebody...) that Matheny asked John Mabry to be the hitting coach.
I'm still waiting to hear (and hoping) whether Chad still has a job.

Hitting coach? I thought they had one of those who did a fairly good job this year.

Like I said, it was just a rumor. But McGwire isn't under contract and there's no way to know if Matheny would want McGwire or if McGwire would be willing to work for Matheny, so who knows.

I have to imagine that under the shiny new stories about every one coming back and happy to work with Manager M, that there are a few people who think it will be weird calling Matheny their boss, and a few for whom Matheny will have a weird time thinking of as an employee: Duncan, Oquendo, McGwire, McCay come to mind. And then what about the players? Pujols? Carpenter???
Frankly I think it should be expected to cause a bit of weirdness to promote a guy who was middling player--not one of the stars, but arguably a core guy--recently enough ago that many of the coaches coached him, and some of the stars now were stars then. Doesn't mean it's a bad idea, but it will be interesting to see who retires, who takes some time off, who decides to grab a golden opportunity elsewhere, etc.

I guess I just figured McGwire found a home doing what he is doing. I kind of feel like Oquendo and McGwire are not members of the coaching staff that can be removed by ownership without some heads turning in the fan base.

Seems to me like the feeling is that most prefered Matheny over anyone but in some cases Oquendo. The respect that we have been told Matheny already has from the current ownership, coaching staff and players will help but he will have to learn he is a boss not a friend.
