It's not whether you win or lose ...

... it's whether you're "reasonably safe."
This doesn't fall under the realm of college sports, but I thought it worthy of posting.
My eyes literally started burning when I read this in this morning's Boston Globe:

Lawrence Academy expected to have a few easy wins on its football schedule this fall, but St. George’s put up even less of a fight than anticipated.
St. George’s has withdrawn from Friday’s game against the Independent School League juggernaut, citing health concerns because of the mismatch in size between the teams’ players.
“This is strictly a safety issue,’’ said St. George’s headmaster Eric Peterson. “We are trying to keep our kids reasonably safe in a game that can be terribly exciting but has risks.’’
It is not clear whether the game is being forfeited, but St. George’s athletic director and football coach John MacKay is not bothered by the possible loss.
“People don’t understand what schools like St. George’s are all about,’’ he said. “Our students are into much more than athletics. Athletic success is so secondary in a place like this.’’
Lawrence Academy has three starting linemen who weigh 300 pounds or more — Max Ricci (6 feet 5 inches, 350 pounds), Tyler Cardoze (6-4, 335), and Ryan Welch (6-2, 300). Several league coaches have cited the Spartans’ considerable size and talent, and the defending league champs have five players committed to Division 1 colleges.
Peterson said the decision was made after discussions with MacKay and Lawrence headmaster Scott Wiggins and athletic director Kathy Noble. Peterson said Lawrence attempted to make compromises, including “playing at only half-speed,’’ to keep everyone safe.
“It’s not fair to the Lawrence players to say ‘take it easy,’ ’’ said MacKay. “Lawrence would be better off practicing than playing St. George’s or St. Mark’s.’’
Lawrence (2-0) was undefeated last season and won every game but two by at least 40 points. The Spartans defeated St. George’s, 48-15, last season.
“We’re disappointed because kids want to play,’’ said Lawrence coach Mike Taylor. “This is a St. George’s decision, not our decision.’’
St. George’s had started 2-0 after a winless 2009. The decision to withdraw was made official prior to last week’s 26-14 victory over Nobles.
“The issue first came up last spring, then we talked about it off and on in the summer,’’ said Peterson. “By the time the roster was in place, it became pretty clear.’’
A steering committee of three headmasters will make the decision on how the withdrawal will be recorded.

Re: It's not whether you win or lose ...

Are you fucking kidding me?  Nice life lesson coach.  When the going gets tough, just concede.  Unbelievable.

Lawrence Academy has 3 linemen who weigh 300 pounds.  Ever hear of a cut block?  How about using speed and quickness to neutralize their size.  No thanks, it's easier to just quit.

And way to send a positive message to your 2-0 (soon to be 2-1) team.  Congratulations on winning your first 2 games, but those wins were so fluky that we couldn't possibly let you play against a good team.  If the high school association up there had any balls, they'd ban the entire football program.

“Our students are into much more than athletics."

Sounds to me like they're being trained for a career in the French military.

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

I'm glad someone else took as much offense to that as I did.
I don't know much about Independent School League football in Massachusetts, but there's definitely a pecking order in terms of presitge. I think Lawrence Academy is near the bottom because it's a jock school, and St. George's is in the middle somewhere. Had the game been between Phillips Andover and Lawrence Academy, the Phillips Andover kids would have had their personal chefs ... sorry, *dietetic advisers* is the preferred term these days, I believe ... play in their place and take the pummeling.

Re: It's not whether you win or lose ...

This is really beyond comprehension to me. I played HS football (sort of, I was the kicker... better than being the ball) in West Texas. That area is married to the High School football team. Every pre-season, Odessa Permian (Friday Night Lights if it doesn't ring a bell) would bring their JV and Freshman teams to kick the absolute shit out of our Varsity and JV teams (they were 5A, we were 4A). We loved it. Why? We were on the field with the Odessa Permian Mojo, and while we were getting our teeth kicked in, it was phenomenal what we learned just watching the things they would do. After those drubbings, we were scared of nobody on our 4A schedule, and we went to State both years I was there.

This is cowardice on a level I can't even begin to explain, and the poor fucking kids will be the laughingstock of the region, despite this not being their call. It's serious fucking horseshit.

Re: It's not whether you win or lose ...

This really is baffling.

I've watched some horrific high school games in the past eight years. I've seen the aforementioned private school beat teams by 70 or 80 points on the basketball court. And I've watched the area's best football team hang 50 in the first half.

But I've never seen a team forfeit. That's bogus. Absolutely bogus.

Remember, this is an UNDEFEATED team that's forfeiting. And the term forfeit really doesn't do the situation justice. This is a coach who would rather have his team not show up. I can maybe see pulling your team off the field if a half-dozen kids get seriously hurt during the course of the game, but to just take a pass on the entire event is sending the message to his kids that the better course in life is to blow off something than to risk failure.
