Waino gets knocked around a bit ...
Hummel version:
JUPITER, Fla. _ Adam Wainwright's string of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run ended at 16 1/3 today when the Detroit Tigers cuffed him for three hits and three runs in the third inning. Wainwright allowed another unearned run in the fourth and then came out after 77 pitches, covering 4 2/3 innings.
Wainwright, not as sharp as he had been in his first four spring training starts, did not strike out a hitter and walked one while giving up six hits.
But the Cardinals' righthander, reaching base for the first time this spring on a walk, came around to score his first run of the spring in the home third on Carlos Beltran's single off the foot of Detroit lefthanded rookie Drew Smyly.
Beltran's hit followed a double by Rafael Furcal. Matt Holliday's groundout plated Furcal.
Tyler Greene belted his second homer of the spring in the third off Smyly as the Cardinals again pulled within one run at 4-3 after a boot by Furcal had given the Tigers a run in the top of the fifth.

They are talking about an innings cap on Steven Strasburg. I wonder if the Cardinals will watch Wainwright carefully. I hope so.

A read a few weeks ago from Strauss that Waino has resisted attempts to limit his workload.

I'm not suggesting that they shouldn't keep an eye on Wainwright, but I think the two situations are very different. Before surgery, Wainwright's arm was conditioned to throw 200+ innings. I'm not sure Strasburg has ever pitched more than 130 innings in a calendar year.

Besides, Strasburg is a sissy, at least by Rob Dibble's standards.
