I didn't even know it was Hernandez. He's the second-worst umpire in the league behind Rabbit Ears Cuzzi. Thank goodness this is a 1-game series and the Cardinals don't have to see him behind the plate tomorrow.

I hope letting the starters go longer is a trend. The Squire would have run up a $600 telephone bill and made five pitching changes by now.

Good win. Couple of two out hits, solid starting pitching. Solid combination.

I like that there were no unnecessary double switches or over-managed bullpen.

Re: Opening Day Gamecrap

I enjoyed the game tonight.  Loshe was good but it is a good thing it isnt July because a few of those popups were pretty well hit.  I thought the new park looked cool.  I like the fish tank.  The opening day stuff seemed really weird.  Show girls, people hanging from lights, I doubt Ali even knew were he was.  I thought the linup did a good job.  Holliday was bad but he will come around.  I was glad to see Furcal look fine.  Delscalso had a good night as well.  I was pretty confused to see Freese at third in the 9th.  I figured Delscalso would go to 3rd and Greene to second.  Maybe even Beltran come out for whats his name or Robinson.  That is when it hit me that TLR was really gone.

Loshe had 91 pitches on him, very few hits and one run.  Loshe wasnt let in longer.  He just had a good night.

Freese just seems automatic with runners on.

It was a cool night.  I am in baseball mode now.  Last year was so unreal I couldnt believe any of it.  This game seemed alot like last years Cards.  Freese coming through.  Delscalso doing his thing and Berk and him drawing walks.  Beltran got in the swing of things.  I just hope Holliday doesnt go into a Pujols style pressing mode.

Did every reliever who warmed up in the bullpen actually pitch in the game? I'll bet that's the first time that's happened in 17 years.

I think they key for him is keeping his breaking stuff out of the middle of the zone. He can throw his fastball into a teacup, and the 2-seamer is usually a solid for him, but he gets in trouble when he leaves his curve up (don't we all?).
I don't like the ballpark. There's too much stuff going on. Though I was pleased that asshole Samson's boast the other night that the stupid statute in centerfield would light up "when we hit a home run on Wednesday" was bullshit.

You could tell Lohse's tank was running low in the seventh, but I like the idea of keeping him in there. I probably would have told Lohse the eighth is his until a runner gets on base, but after Morrison singled Matheny left him in to face Sanchez. Maybe it was a matchup thing, because Lohse made him look bad even before he got him looking at that third strike.
LaRussa never would have even considered sending Lohse out for the eighth, and it would have been a moot point anyway since the way the top of the eighth played out, he would have pinch-hit for him with a runner on third and two outs.
Remember the LaRussa mantra - You almost never get criticized for yanking a pitcher too early, but every armchair manager in the world knows when you've pulled a pitcher too late.

I didnt see Ali, but Buster Olney posted on Twitter that he "doesnt want to see Ali this way", so I'm assuming he isnt doing well?

Reminds me of the Indy 500 jerks dragging Mary Rose Hulman out there to croak out "GENTLEMEN START YER ENGINES" into her very senior years, then into her Alzheimers years, and finally into the year where her sentence was interrupted by a long thread of drool dropping from her lip. Mercifully, she passed away before they could embarrass her further the following year. Let Ali keep his dignity please.

Jeffrey Loria and Ali's handlers should all be hanged for allowing this man to be exploited at this stage of his life.  You have to scroll down for the video.

Ali's deal was painfull.  the last time I saw him was during the movie Will Smith did.  He shook then but was still a well build man.  To do what they did was pretty classless.

Matheny put my fears to rest that he would be anxious to put his stamp on his first game. He did what a good manager does and stay out of the way as much as possible.

Loria, at least, on principle.

The only criticism of him was that he didn't have Berkman play behind the runner when Reyes was on first and Bonifacio was at the plate in the ninth with a 3-run lead. But it's a minor error, and Berkman shouldn't have even had to ask in the first place.

Re: Opening Day Gamecrap

My only criticism of the whole game was that I thought Beltan could have got to the ball that bounced up against the fence.  I guess he likely just didnt want to risk a trip to the DL on the first game but I thought he could have got there.

He did seem to take a curcuitous route on his way to failing to make the catch .....I think he misjudged how hard it was hit .

From Bernie

"One of the highlights of opening night (for me) was seeing our Hall of Fame baseball writer, Rick Hummel, give the business to retired Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. It was all in fun, just the usual good-natured razzing that's part of the baseball culture. La Russa watched the game in the press box, and was into the game, writing down a lot of notes. Anyway, around the seventh inning, with Kyle Lohse making a bid for a no-hitter, Hummel approached La Russa and said: "You would have pulled him after the fourth inning."

La Russa was amused. But La Russa also pointed to Lohse's game logs and challenged Hummel to look at how many times Lohse had pitched deep into games with TLR as manager.

Personally, I don't think La Russa would have pulled Lohse after 4. But TLR may have had someone warming up.

After all, La Russa holds the major-league record with 12,236 career pitching changes, according to ESPN Stats & Information. "
