My favorite Brennaman moment so far this season was when he whiffed the call of a walkoff homer by Todd Frazier because he thought the ball was caught at the wall. Then he spent an entire half-inning the next night personally apologizing to Frazier.
If someone made me King for a Day, one of the things I'd do is ban television announcers from the clubhouse of the team they cover. Half these guys spent half their time trying to suck up to the players, I guess because either they want to be friends with them or, maybe, they think they somehow need to boost the confidence of grown men who play baseball for a living.
Hrabosky does this, but he's not as bad as the color guy on the Tigers' radio broadcasts. I was listening to the XM on the way home from work on Tuesday. Whenever the Tigers got a hit or the Cardinals made an out, he'd unleash this annoying belly laugh, over the play-by-play guy. I'm still not sure what Furcal did to make the last out of the game, because all I heard was laughter.
I never watch golf unless I'm with my dad, and he had the U.S. Open on when we went to see him on Sunday. I was astonished at how honest Johnny Miller's commentary was. When a guy hit a lousy shot, Miller acknowledged the lousiness of the shot and then tried to explain why the shot was lousy. My dad told me Miller makes it a point to not fraternize with the players, so he's able to analyze them without having to worry about offending their delicate egos.
