Champions League update

Group A
Porto looks safe. PSG needs only a draw in its last two matches to go through to the knockout stage.

Group B
Schalke is in great shape, with Olympiacos at home and then away to Montpellier. The second spot is up for grabs. Arsenal has an easier path with Montpellier at the Emirates, but they may need a result in Piraeus to go through.

Group C
Malaga is the surprise of the tournament so far. The second spot is up for grabs. Never bet against Milan.

Group D
Man City is all but finished. Dortmund is sitting atop the table, but this group is up for grabs. It's would be nice to see Ajax knock out Real Madrid, but that's a tough task at the Bernabeu.

More after tomorrow's matches ...

Re: Champions League update

Group E

Juve is in trouble here. They need to beat Chelsea or Shaktar in Donestsk. On the plus side, they're tied with the Blues on goal differential. Anybody who knows anything knows Shaktar isn't a fluke. They almost took a point at Stamford Bridge today.

Group F

Interesting group. When the draw was announced, you figured Bayern would walk through, but Valencia is atop the table and could wind up with 15 points. BATE will probably need to win in Munich to get through.

Group G

Barcelona needs a draw in either of its last two games to make it through. Celtic enhanced its chances with its upset win over Barca today, and could even top the table. Benfica needs help. Spartak Moscow needs a miracle.

Group H

Man U got the easiest draw in the tournament, as usual. The Romanian side's underdog story was inspirational, but it's over for them. The second spot is there for Braga.  If they can get four points in their last two matches, the should be able to make it through.

Re: Champions League update

Group E

Shaktar leads the group, and Juve enhanced its status with a 3-0 demolition of Chelsea in Turin. It's certainly not over for the Blues, who would be the first defending champ to not make it to the knockout state. The most direct route is a win over the Norweigan team and a Juve loss in Donetsk.

Group F

Bayern and Valencia are through. The Spanish side leads the Germans by one goal in differential, but Bayern plays its last game at home, and Valenica is on the road.

Group G

Barca has clinched the group. Benfica and Celtic are tied for the second spot, but Celtic plays Spartak Moscow in Glasgow and Benfica has to go to the Nou Camp. Good luck with that.

Group H

Galatasaray stayed alive with a win over Man U.'s junior varsity, and is tied for the second spot with Cluj. The Romanians have to travel to Old Trafford, while the Turks play Braga in Portugal. It'll likely depend upon who Sir Alex Douchebag decides to put in the lineup.

Re: Champions League update

Sorry this was late. Holiday obligations and all ..

Group A

Porto and PSG are through. Zagreb has to at least score on Dec. 4 to avoid the infamy of going through an entire group stage without a win, a draw or a goal.

Group B

Schalke and Arsenal are through.

Group C

Unless something weird happens, Malaga will top the group, and Milan will earn the other spot.

Group D

Dortmund and Real Madrid advance. Man City has to get at least a draw in Germany to even make the Europa League. Most disappointing team in the CL.

Re: Champions League update

Group A

PSG tops the group, with Porto second. Zagreb scores a goal in a 2-1 loss to Kiev to avoid a historical negative.

Group B

Schalke and Arsenal. We'll see when the draw comes out for the final 16 if Wenger sending the junior varsity to Greece today ended up being a bad move. The Gunners probably deserve Barca the way they've been playing.

Group C

You would have won big bucks if you had bet Malaga would go through the group stage without a loss. Milan was completely unimpressive in the group stage, but no one wants to draw them in the round of 16.

Group D

Dortmund tops the Group o' Death, with Real Madrid second. The big story is Man City not winning a game. No knockout phase, no Europa League. No nuthin' except back to the Prem.

Re: Champions League update

Group E

Chelsea becomes the first defending champ to not make the final 16. Juve and Shaktar Donetsk go through.

Group F

Bayern Munich and Valencia

Group G

Barca and Celtic. If Messi's injury is serious, Vilanova is going to have some 'splaining to do. Celtic is a great story, but it ends in the round of 16.

Group H

Man U and Galatasaray, the latter edging Club Bruj on head-to-head results. I hope Manchester draws Real Madrid, just because one of them has to lose.
