Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

I played softball for a year and hated it. My team finished eighth out of eight teams and had to play the regular season champion in the first round of a best-of-three playoff. We somehow won the first game, and lost the second game by about 25 runs. In the second game, our third baseman got hit in he head and got knocked out cold.
So we had to play the third game. No one volunteered to play third because they were afraid they were going to get killed, so I just said "Fuck it. I'll play third." We're leading by one run in the bottom of the seventh (and last) inning, one out, with the bases loaded. All the other team needs is a sac fly to tie and a single to win. The batter hits a wicked line drive to my right, about a foot off the ground. I dive for the ball, which somehow lands in my glove, and my glove lands on the base, with the runner about five feet off the bag. Double play. Game over. Series over. If I had been right-handed, the ball would have gone down the line to easily score two runs, a fact that was not lost on the other team.
As we're high-fiving each other in the middle of the diamond, one of the players on the other team yells at me "Merry Fucking Christmas."
I don't remember what took place in the next 30 seconds. There was apparently some out of body experience where I threatened about five different people, none of whom were willing to take me on.
I figured after that if I was going to get riled up, I ought to be playing a real sport.

The box scores doesnt reflect your disappointment.  i believe choate finally got some outs.  Salas had a scoreless inning and miller was effective.  Is this stuff that isnt showing up in the box score or were or what?

I wish i had a schedule that allowed for me to play on a team.  I dont think id get all torqued off tho.

Choate threw 1 pitch, the batter hit a rocket that Craig dove, caught, got up and stepped on first for a double play. Choate was lucky, not good.

Fantasy baseball scoring question:

If my guy is just a "P" and not slotted under "SP" or "RP" do his stats count if he pitches?

Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

Is he playing or is he on your bench?  Without actually seeing the website, my first reaction would be to assume you can slot him in either spot and get his stats. But that's just a guess.

What Fors said. The standard is to have seven scoring slots for pitchers - three strarters, two relievers and two that can be either a starter or a reliver.

I'm trying to set up my rotation where I can have a starter going every day. Maybe this isn't the best strategy, but it feels like my best chance for maximizing points from my staff.

Depends upon whether your league has an innings limit. If your league has a cap and it's between 1,250-1,300 innings, you'll run out of innings if you start cherry-picking. There's nothing worse than watching everyone else zoom past you in September because you've stopped accruing pitching stats.
I've found the best way to play it is just stick with your five best starters and your two closers and leave them alone, unless one of them gets hurt.

I'm in Yahoo's default league, so I'm not sure what the rule is there.

It's 1,250 then, unless your commissioner has adjusted the settings.
Go to the bottom of your team page, and it will show you how many innings your team has pitched, and how many innings it's projected to pitch over 162 games.

Hmm, Yahoo is showing that 1,400 is the max.

That'll help you with your strategy. I haven't played in a public league in three years, so Yahoo may have increased the limit in the default settings since then. I know there was a lot of hand-wringing about the 1,250-inning limit because managers who like to massage their lineups on a daily basis were running out of innings.
In my league, we can only re-set our lineups once a week, so the 1,250-inning figure is appropriate.

Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

Re set ur line up once a week?  There is a deadline to set ur lineup then ur done?  That sounds interesting.  I coukdnt take the daily grind.  Plus in public leagues it seems everyone gives up with a month to go in the season.

Yeah, you have to set your lineup for the week by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. The explanation I got from the commissioner when I joined was it's because we all have wives and kids and jobs and can't be obsesssing 24/7 about fantasy baseball, but these guys (and one girl) seem pretty obsessive. We almost needed to call in U.N. peacekeepers last year over what has become known as the Ryan Braun Controversy.

I've got money on it so I'm taking it seriously.

I feel really good about this pitching staff. I have Verlander, Zimmerman, Miley, Shelby Miller, Gee and Paul Maholm. That's a solid collection of guys who will pitch for winning teams and get strikeouts.

Sadly, I'm in dead last in that category, but I think Maholm lifted me out of the cellar tonight.

what was that all about?

i could buy into the idea of not obsessing.  Checking a lineup everyday was exhausting and boring.  i was in a nl only league once and that was alittle better.  I dont follow the al well enough to have a clue.  Still half the fun of fantasy leagues is doing it with people you can rub your success in their face.  Nobody i know even likes baseball.

Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

I love the league I'm in. It's an auction league, which requires a lot more draft prep IMO. Plus, it's interesting to see the contrasting strategies. You want to buy Ryan Braun and Mike Trout, have at it. But you're likely to have 3 or 4 guys on your team who suck.

It's also a keeper league. If you keep a player you have to give him a 30% raise and all partial dollars round up. You can keep a player twice (so 3 total seasons) before the player has to go back in the pool.

But the best part for me is you only get 6 roster moves for the entire year (DL moves don't count) and you don't have a bench. You draft your players and they play every day unless you drop him or he goes on the DL. No daily or even weekly decisions. No combing the waiver wire every day. Draft em and let em play.

Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

Deep benches and unlimited moves are very much a drag.

Re: 4/6 Gamecrap

"what was that all about?"

We had our draft before the shitstorm with Braun and PEDs broke, and the guy who took Braun in the first round wanted a do-over because it looked like he was going to lose Braun for the first 50 games of the season. The commissioner put it to a vote of the managers, and the subsequent discussion became a nasty debate that descended into allegations and threats. The whole thing became a moot point when Braun's suspension was overturned, but there's still lingering bitterness between some of the primary belligerents.

I like the cap on waiver acquisitions. I was in a league once with a guy who made 300 moves during the season. Knowing the personality involved, I'm sure he was sure he was showing off how brilliant he is by dumping John Grabow and picking up Will Ohman as the fifth reliever on his bench.

I would not been in favor of a do over.  Who does that?  I mean tough shit.

It would have been a logistical nightmare. It's hard enough to get everyone on-line at the same time with a few weeks notice. Forget about trying to organize a draft in a day or two. And if you re-draft it's like you've already showed your hand in the poker game. Now-I-know-I-have-to-draft-so-and-so-in-the-third-round-because-he-got-taken-in-the-fourth-round-in-the-draft-we-had-last-week type of thing.
