Comeback for Carp?

Strauss writing this morning that Carpenter is throwing and wants to take a shot at the bullpen.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Of course he is. Guy's a warrior.

"The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner recently resumed a throwing program at Busch Stadium less than three months after weakness, pain and discoloration in his right side forced him to wave off spring training."

I'm 45 now. Some mornings I wake up and something's a little sore. Sometimes I don't feel as strong as usual. I've never woke up and found anything the wrong color, but I'm pretty sure if I did and I knew the cause, I'd stop doing whatever caused it.

I was kidding about the "Help Wanted" sign. Really.

Yeah, this is the point where a family member or someone else who gives a crap about him steps in and says "You've got all the money you need. You've got two rings. Your reputation is secure. Don't do this."

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Hey as bad as the pen has been i dont think he would hurt things.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

At this point it's less about whether he hurts the bullpen and more about will he be able to lift his arm later in life.

I appreciate the effort, but I'm with Artie. If something was causing his arm to become discolored, that's a bigger concern than the success of the 2013 Cardinals.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

With the way the roster is they could drop wiggington, add carp, throw him twice a week and be much better off.  These young pitchers could use carp in the pen.  I am not to worried about his purple arm.  Everyone accepted and supported him ending his career.  If this is what he wants to do then so be it. The idea has been thrown out there by media and teamamtes since he retired.  Wainwright just brought it up last week in his q and a thing.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

The mistake the cardinals made was starting him last year.  They should have been selective and used him out of the pen, imo.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Who was the quarterback who kept wanting to go out there, in spite of neck problems, as in, they had already fused some of his cervical vertebrae?  Joe Montana?  Maybe there have been many.

As for Carp, try this:

Merciful God, we commend these for whom we pray to your loving care, knowing that you will do for them far greater things than we can ask or imagine.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Montana's problems were mostly due to an injured elbow, but he took a pounding his last couple of years because he was immobile. I think it was during his first season in Kansas City when a linebacker from the Raiders named Aaron Wallace was chasing Montana toward the Chiefs' sideline. Montana pulled his hamstring, fell to the ground and about a half-dozen of Marty Schottenheimer's thugs pounced on Wallace and beat him to a pulp. Wallace never touched Montana, but the officials penalized him 15 yards for unnecessary roughness and threw him out of the game.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Carpenter threw a 75 pitch bullpen session today. Apparently no pain or numbness reported.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

I think this is huge.  There is nobody more focused then carp.  I domt see how just him being there doesnt improve the pen.  If he can come out and pitch wellit will be amazing.  he justfinds a wayto get it done.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

Meh . . . Cards are 22-12 and 3 games atop the NLC.  Whatever problems they have can be fixed in July.

this is exactly why he shoukd have never been considered for the rotation.  He could have been usefull in the bullpen.  it was wreckless to think he could be a starter again.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

I honestly don't think it would have mattered. Carpenter is trying to return with a body that just isn't going to allow it.

Probably the best thing for this team is that he remain visible while attempting his comeback, but never touch the mound. It's unlikely he'd ever be successful as a starter, and as a reliever he'd probably be unavailable more days than he'd be available.

that very well may be the case.  Still if your wanting to give the guy an honest change and the issue is his body cant take the beating, limiting innings would be key.  My problem isnt that i think this team needs him.  I think the team is likely better without him.  My issue is that it just seems dumb.

I still have no idea why he's doing this.

Re: Comeback for Carp?

95 mph fastball?  Sounds like he was a bit jacked up.

I'm not holding my breath,  but this team could use this comeback in the worst possible way.

So I take it there were no discolored body parts after his last outing?

Re: Comeback for Carp?

I just don't feel quite as optimistic about this Carp returning thing, as I may have in the past ....

At least none that are vital to pitching.

FWIW, I haven't seen this reported on the Cardinals or P-D websites.  It was on Rotoworld with a link to a Memphis sportscaster's Twitter page.  However, Springfield shows Seth Blair as starting Saturday on the road.  The Memphis website has Saturday's starter as TBD, but they are playing at home.

Is there anything else that can get discolored during a weekend in Springfield?
