Re: MLB Draft Thread

Sounds to me like the cardinals drafted lefties they thought could make an impact sooner then later.  Idk who they passed up but i have to believe there was more talent out there.  I am more a fan of draft best overall talent.

Baseball America

Gonzales- #28
Kaminsky- #21
Mercado- #38

MLB.com

Gonzales- #14
Kaminsky- #38
Mercado- #36

Again, not like I know anything about these guys, but rankings per the "experts" don't suggest they necessarily reached on anyone.

Yes, both Miller and Wacha were drafted at 19.

With the money rules in place, it's more difficult to go crazy with draft picks.  From what I'm reading, Gonzales may be a guy they can sign a little below slot, but they'll probably have to spend that money to get Kaminsky and Mercado to sign.  The Post was saying expect nothing special today.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

MLB.com is reporting that the Cardinals have signed all 3 of their 1st day picks.  They went about $300,000 above slot to get it done.

Gonzales- $1.85M (slot $2.06M)
Kaminsky- $1.79M (exactly slot)
Mercado- $1.5M (slot $970K)

The story said they have $1,772,600 to sign their remaining 8 picks from rounds 3-10 and for anyone after round 10 who gets more than $100,000.  Of course, there’s also the 5% they can go over slot before they lose a draft pick.  That number is probably about $345,000.  So that leaves them with about $2.1M.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

I would assume they are in pretty good shape.

They drafted a high school pitcher in the 11th round they were hoping to take a shot at signing.  They thought it would take somewhere in the neighborhood of $900K- $1M to get it done.  I'm not sure if they left themselves enough room, but I will concede they know much more about this process than I do.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

Yeah, ill second guess the drafting system in place when they are not the best in baseball.  It jsbetter hard to be negative right now.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

MLB.com is reporting that the Cardinals have agreed to terms (although the deals are not yet official) with Malik Collymore (10th round) and Steven Farinaro (11th round).  The deals are believed to be above-slot deals, which was expected since both players are high schoolers with Division I scholarship offers in hand (Collymore to Missouri, Farinaro to UCLA).

A couple of scouting reports on Collymore, who Baseball America ranked as their #190 prospect.

(Perfect Game) Malik Collymore is a 2013 SS/2B with a 6-0 195 lb. frame from Mississauga, ON who attends Port Credit SS. Large athletic frame with present strength. As a right handed hitter he has a leg lift trigger with high hands and a high back elbow. He has a short swing with a line drive swing plane and has good extension. He has very good bat speed with lift, hit 3 home runs in BP. He showed the ability to run with 6.54 in the 60. As an infielder he showed good footwork with smooth fielding actions and good arm strength. He showed lateral agility with soft sure hands. Excellent Student.

(Baseball America) Collymore has a tightly-wound, compact build at 6 feet and 190 pounds. He is a tick above average as a runner, shows nice infield actions and average arm strength, giving him a chance to stay at shortstop. Otherwise, he’ll make a fine defensive second baseman. He has interesting bat speed and some sneaky power for his size.

On Farinaro

(MLB Draft Tracker) Farinaro doesn’t have much projection left at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, but he makes up for it with his stuff and pitchability. His fastball will sit in the high 80s and will occasionally have good cutting action to it. He has shown a good feel for his changeup, which he throws with good arm speed and has solid fade to it. He also throws a hard curveball which could be average down the line. Farinaro has a good feel for pitching and this allows all of his pitches to play up. He is committed to UCLA and may be a tough sign.

(MLB.com) Kantrovitz said Farinaro, one of 20 players to attend the Cardinals' pre-draft workout last Tuesday at Busch Stadium, has first- and second-round talent, but likely slipped in the Draft due to signabiliy concerns. "We were crossing our fingers that he got to us in the 11th round," Kantrovitz said. "I think our guys just out-scouted some of the other teams in assessing and evaluating his stuff. That's a pretty neat story if it's able to come to fruition and if we're able to strike a deal." Farinaro totaled 12 wins with a 0.82 ERA at Head-Royce School (Calif.) this season, holding his opponents to a .107 batting average and striking out 157 through 77 innings, according to MaxPreps.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

The Cardinals have also apparently agreed to terms with 12th rounder Racardo Bautista, who was the first graduate of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

For those interested, here's a fun video of a high school home run derby held at the Marlins Park in Miami.  Skip to the 3 minute mark to get to the start of the home run derby part of the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RtK4t2y1Dg

I realize he's using an aluminum bat, but that's a strong high schooler.
