Father's Day Gamecrap

Cardinals pitchers getting abused by the worst offense in baseball.

I was wrong about Lyons.

Good at-bat by Jay.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

This is stating the obvious, but if the Cardinals pitch to Stanton again today, they're making a mistake.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

Yeah, they need a 5th starter. I'd rather see more Joe Kelly at this point.

The wild speculations about a major deal have shifted from Tulowitzki to Cliff Lee.  Do you have a preference, Tulo?  Lee?  neither?

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

Did we just lose a series to the worst team in baseball, giving up 25 runs in 3 games?

Correct. Plus they went 5-4 on a road trip involving two of the worst teams in baseball.

Tulowitzki just broke a rib and is out for at least 6 weeks, so that's a non-issue.

Supposedly Philadelphia's GM said he wasn't trading Lee, so that may be a non-issue as well.

neither.  When carp comes back it will be like a big trade.

Read: his value is low.

Read: he is driving Lee's value up.

You got a chuckle out of me with that one.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

Why do you think his value is low? Even if he's off the DL before the trade deadline, he's the best hitting shortstop in MLB by a country mile. He's having an MVP-caliber season and the Rockies are a half-game out of first place in a weak division.

Tulowitzki's value is anything but low. The Rockies are not trading him.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

Also, Cliff Lee is 35 and owed $77 million over the next three seasons. Unless the Phillies eat a large amount of his contract, they are getting nothing for him. I'd say his value is pretty low right now, all things considered.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

I've long thought this team needs a dependable innings guy. You all might scoff at this, but Ricky Nolasco strikes me as a pretty good fit for the rotation. Dish out the abuse if you will, but this guy also thought the Mujica deal would work out (of course, I was cursing his name during the postseason).

Just saying, if the Cardinals make a deal for Nolasco, chances are good they turn him into a strong No. 3.

Watching him beat us yesterday, I had the exact same thought.  And Nolasco shouldn't cost a mint to acquire.

Chris Duncan just asked Dave McKay if locking up a young player is the way baseball is heading. I'm dead serious.

Re: Father's Day Gamecrap

Idk what the cards should do.  They have alot of options but idk what would be best.   The things that worry me are, westbrooks health and how miller and lynn will hold up when they near 200 innings.

Idk how the cards protect themself at the deadline.  It is clear the team has the pieces to make a trade.  Also  the team is good enough it needs look at ways to put itself over the edge.

Joe kelly is a real option.  I think he is a better starter then bullpen pitcher.  He isnt proven tho.  Carp has to figure in.  You know he is going to try a comeback and the team will allow it.  I prefer him in the pen and if needed kelly in the rotation.

the playoff rotation right now would likely be waino, lynn, miller, westbrook. There is alot of room for improvement at the top end of that.  A case could be made that the cards need a co ace.  kelly doesnt address that.  Right now the easy solution is to find someone who moves lyons to memphis.  The top of the rotation is clicking. Looking down the road i think things could fall apart at the most critical time, Near the playoffs.

low-high, big-small . . . , these are relative terms.

His value when injured is low relative to when he is not injured.

I still cannot think of Nolasco without thinking of the Juan Pierre trade all those years ago.  Who would have thought way back then that the trade would result in a life sentence in Miami for Nolasco?

Who knows what kind of deal the Cards would put together for him if they were interested?  The thing is that Moz is in a very good situation.  He does not need to trade, but if he does, he has tons of pieces he can trade and piles of cash to take on added payroll.  We already heard during the offseason the math on how the Cards could afford Tulo.  I imagine the could afford Lee, too.  But whether either would be a good deal, given the size of their contract, is worth contemplating.  I would be at least as concerned about picking up Tulo's contract, as I would with Lee's, especially with Tulo's history of injuries.  Lee, on the other hand, seems to be pitching well this season.  I don't know how to project a pitcher's life span, but many of them remain effective in the 36-40 stretch of life.

Not that I want to be seen advocating for Lee, but a Wainright-Lee 1-2 punch would be like Johnson-Schilling, Maddux-Glavine, etc.

Remember playing AZ all those years ago, trying to get through Johnson and Schilling?

Watching Suppan beat us in a mid-season game resulted in us getting him as an innings eater #3, and it kind of worked for us.  But when you go for a #3, a lot of things can happen: Suppan, Lohse, Westbrook, all come to mind.  So, do Tomko, Wells, etc.
