In 14 innings so far today, the only player with a hit with a runner in scoring position is Lance Lynn.

This feels like today all over again.

Oh good, just what this lineup needs, rob johnson.

Maybe Matheny should start a lineup of nine pitchers tomorrow. They're the only ones who seem to be capable of getting on base.

I stand corrected. Yesterday got worse.

I didn't see either game, but a co-worker who's also a Pirates fan tells me that the Cardinals in general seemed lethargic, "the right fielder", especially, jogging to balls in the outfield. He couldn't believe how bad Holliday looked on defense: "I thought he was an All-Star".

"He couldn't believe how bad Holliday looked on defense: "I thought he was an All-Star".
Holliday had a tough second game. McCutchen hit a ball that probably would have gone off the top of the fence, but the ball caromed off Holliday's glove and went over for a home run. Later in the game, he turned the wrong way when someone (Harrison?) hit a ball that went over his head and caromed off the fence for a triple.
The fans really gave it to him after that. I understand they've been waiting 20 years to play meaningful games in Pittsburgh, but Holliday is a decent guy. It's not like he's Ben Roethlisberger and he's date-raped a couple of drunk chicks.
Beltran's malaise was nothing out of the ordinary. The primary problem in Game 1 was almost every line drive the Cardinals ended up being caught. In the top of the first, the Cardinals had runners on first and second with one out and Beltran hit a seed to the gap in right-center that McCutchen took off the top of the grass and then threw to first to double off the runner. That ball gets down, and both runners score and the day might end up going in a very different direction.
Beltran's next at bat came with two on and two outs, and he hit another wicked line drive that happened to end up in Jones' glove. Three feet either way, and both runners score. Then in extra innings with runners on first and third and one out, Holliday hit a sharp 1-hopper that Barmes snared and turned into a double play. And the way the Pirates scored the winning run was demoralizing. If Siegrist fields the ball cleanly, or if the ball gets through to Kozma, it's an inning-ending double play. Even if Siegrist just knocks it down, the winning run doesn't score.
If there was any "general lethargy," it was in the second game. Carpenter and Craig aren't hitting, and it's very difficult to get any offense going when they're not. But let's at least give Cumpton some credit for making some good pitches.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the guy also thought Holliday looked bad getting doubled off at first on a fly. Well, if the team can somehow get its act together, 2 out of 5 wouldn't be bad.

Maybe, but it was a phenomenal catch by a phenomenal player. I know you have to wait for the ball to get down, but as soon as Beltran hit the ball, I thought it was an easy double.

Here's the other ball by Beltran that could have broken the game open early.

Both nice plays and really tough breaks.

It the Fufkin household, it usually means my mother-in-law is halfway into a bottle of white wine.

i guess we get to find out how important he is. I dont see any replacements better then the combo of rob johnson and tony cruiz. I hope mm learns from this mistake.
