Elsewhere in the MLB

Clint Hurdle is going to manage the Pirates.  I will go out on a limb and say he fails.

Ryne Sandberg is going to manage the Phillies triple A team.

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

Have you ever seen a friend busted into a million pieces because the woman he loves and dotes on gets her kicks by screwing everyone he knows?  Ryne looks like a nice guy and I can't get pleasure from seeing pretty much anybody suffer that.

There no way Ryne Sandberg could know that many people, Max.

What is the scoop on the Cindy Sandberg jokes?

Cindy was reportedly the Cubs clubhouse toy.  Legend has it that the Cubs traded Dave Martinez for practically nothing to appease Ryno because Cindy was banging Martinez.  Later she was rumored to have slept with Rafael Palmiero and Mark Grace.   There may have been others, but those are the ones I can remember.

Yeah, if you got Cindy Sandberg and Tommy Herr's wife in the same room, you'd have the makings of a decent orgy.

Given that I would necessarily be one of the people he knows, the answer, I'm sorry to say, is "No."

For some sickos on a power high, that's the fun of it.  There was a story in the Bush era of some politician or soldier who was up for a big promotion, and his own former employees killed it, saying he wasn't qualified.  The story then leaked out that it was "sour grapes" because the guy had a habit of screwing his employees wives, with their knowledge.  Now I remember the story better, I think he was a career officer in the State Department.

OK, "tries to screw".

I must be getting old, because I find it astonishing that Rick Barry would have to be referred to as "the father of San Antonio Spurs star Brent Barry."

Speaking of getting old . . .

On the one hand, it is probably embarrassing that I only just discovered this song while driving to the grocery store.  But on the other hand, it is good to know that even at my age there are classic songs left to discover.  The version I heard was an uptempo version by Mel Torme, not the wimpy one available on the Youtube.

This Roy Clarke version is similar, but with watered down lyrics:

Here's a decent version by Johnny Mathis:

And this is the author, singing in English, with the unexpurgated lyrics:

Then I'd have nothing to be sorry about.

I saw the Roy Clark version when it was originally broadcast and still think it is the best rendition I have ever heard.

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

Rumor has it that the Rockies are about to give Tulowitzki at 7 year extension that will effectively make his current contract a 10 year deal.  No "official" word on an amount, but have seen speculation of $200+ million.

If they give Tulowitzki a contract like that then what is Pujols worth.  Tulo is a fine player but really just average in the history of the game.  Where as his contract would be historicly big.  Just because on team overpays for a player I dont believe that should effect another teams ablity to get a fair deal.  However as a Cardinals fan it always comes back to "how does this effect me".

MLB and the random blogger are both saying it might be around $160 million

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

I heard this morning that it was 160 mil & everyone seems pretty happy they did that - except for some of the sports writers.  I don't know but if the guy stays healthy & keeps hitting & fielding like he is currently - or even gets better - than I suppose he's worth it (wink)

Maybe Web, but in that last sentence alone you posted 3 conditions to this being a smart move: 1) if he stays healthy, 2) if he keeps hitting and 3) if he keeps playing defense.

From what I've read, Tulowitzki was owed about $40M over the next 4 seasons, essentially making this new deal a 6 year, $120M extension.  Assume Tulowitzki does everything expected of him over the next 4 seasons.  How much more than 6/$120M would it take to sign him?

Seems awfully risky.

Perhaps, but I wonder if he could have gotten that kind of money elsewhere?  There are teams begging for a good shortstop & who knows what they might have offered.  Not that I'm encouraging this sort of thing  (nervous)

Understood, but they wouldn't have had to let it reach that point.  Tulo is signed through 2013 with a team option for 2014.  They let him play through 2013, exercise the option and then approach him and offer 6/$120M.  Even if you assume his value has gone up a bit, how much would it realistically go up?  6/$140M??  6/$150M??  I'm not sure anyone outside of Colorado would be willing to pay that kind of money for someone who hasn't played home games outside of Coors, and even if it did, isn't it worth the extra $20-30M to get 3 more seasons to assess the player in whom you're making this kind of investment.

I don't think he will, but what if he posts more seasons like 2008?
