Sorry to see Hawpe with the Padres.  He can really hit when he's "on".  How about that deal given to Carlos Gonzales by The Rockies? It's a seven year 80 million dollar deal!  Pending a physical exam of course but wow!  Who would have thought that the Rockies management would spring for sooooo much money for two players? He & Tulo have become good friends & they better live up to the expected potential or the fan base will turn.

I have a feeling Cargo is the real thing, Web. Money well spent, IMO.

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

Padres have put together a team that looks like an expansion team.  They have picked up basicly a new team.

Trading for Ludwick last year to play rf.  Signing Hudson to play second, Hawpe to play first  and Harang to start.  Trading for SS Jason Bartlett.  Other then Hudson it has still be a lack luster offseason.

I guess I have to agree!  The Rockies 'did good' as they say, when they traded for him!  They also got Huston Street in that deal so it's one of the best trades I've seen them make (happy)

The A's haven't done as well so far. Peterson didn't make it out of AA last year, Mortensen can't stick in the majors and Michael Taylor isn't apparently the second coming of Michael Bourn yet.
Sometimes the Genius of Billy Beane is subtle.

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

Does anyone else think that Capuano for $1.5 million sounds like a deal that the Cards should have been mulling over, especially given their particularly actue need for left-handed pitching this year?

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

Uggla signed 5 year, $62.5 deal.

Rumor is Texas is going to give Beltre 5 years, $80M. Wonder what that means for Michael Young.

I read something you wrote once, it was about your mother in law and how she's a big pain in the ass, right?  See?  Don't accuse me of never reading anything!

[did you say that already?  I did not see it when I posted that]

He would be a great fit here.  He would improve our infield at 3 spots or has his fielding dropped off that much.  26 errors at third last year.  20hrs and 90 RBIS sounds good.

They didnt resign him.  I am not sure why.  I remember them say they would like to resign him under the right conditions but dont know what they ment by that.

Got it.  I read somewhere that Young is owed $16M/yr through 2013.  Unless Texas is willing to pay about $12M of that money, there isn't much chance he'd ever land in St. Louis.

That's almost a Holliday sized contract for a guy who only performs like Holliday, seemingly, in his walk year.

Sorry Artie I was too busy trying to understand the NCAA logic on rule violations and enforcement (which resulted in me just tossing my left nut on a counter and whacking it with a hammer a couple of times. Just as painful, but a lot less time consuming).

You say something? =)

$12.5 million per year for 5 years?!?  does anybody else think that is bizarrely below expectations?  Given what Werth got ($18 million for 7 years), what should a power-hitting 2B get?

Read somewhere it's the largest contract ever paid a second baseman

Re: Elsewhere in the MLB

That's probably a good contract for the Braves. Uggla will eventually have to be moved off second base.

I think it's weird that Cardinals fans were wanting Uggla, since he has all the warts Colby Rasmus has, minus the annoying father.

Werth got way more then he should have and I think Cardinal fans dixation with Uggla has to do as much with the crappy production we have seen out of seconds base over the past few years as it does with Uggla.  That and our weak ass lineup.

Chase Utley got a 7/85 contract which is larger then Ugglas.  Robinson Cano got a 4/30 with two option years for 14 and 15 million and Brian Roberts got a 10 mill a year contract.  Those would be slightly smaller.

I didn't read closely enough.  It was largest annual average.  Uggla is making 12.4/yr (It's a $72M deal, not 72.5), whereas Utley's is 12.1.

Uggla had 58 HR after his 2nd season playing 2B, Colby has 39 after two years in CF.  Money aside, the offense would probably be better with Schu in CF and Uggla at 2B, than Rasmus in CF and Schu at 2B.

We are all waiting on pins and needles for Rasmus to start putting up Uggla-like numbers.
