spring is here

Well spring training.  Still snow on the ground here.  Still baseball is getting close and everyone is in the best shape of their lives.

Im not very excited by st this year.  Seems like we kind of know what to expect from this team.  Only bad things can happen.

I think you're right. Anything short of the World Series would be a disappointment. It's a dangerous mentality when you consider there were two other 90-win teams in the division last year and the Dodgers' payroll is greater than the net worth of most third world countries.

Re: spring is here

Im not going to be disappointed if they dont win it all.  I think it is a realistic goal but i have a hard time expecting it.  Spring is usually interesting because there are player fighting for roster spots and everyday status.  That might still be somewhat the case but the roster is to well put together to really matter.  All i do is check the news and make sure nobodys arms fell off.

There are some mildly-interesting subplots. One of the websites ran a story today about Kozma trying to return to his 2012 glory, and there's the centerfield dynamic. You wonder if they'll get 162 out of Craig, how Adams will perform as a regular, if Wong will stick and if Carpenter will handle make the move back to third as effortlessly as he switched to second, but the good news is the starting rotation is pretty much set and the bullpen seems to be aligned, with Motte's return the only real variable.
This is about as prepared for a season as I've ever seen a Cardinals team. My inherent pessimism is going to have a hard time rearing its head this spring.

Re: spring is here

I see it as a bit of a redux from 2005. That spring was fairly boring since they retained everyone but Womack, Renteria and Matheny. The only thing we were questioning was how Carpenter and Mulder would do. Our concerns now are generally about health, which is a concern for every team.

My other concern is the absolute stupidity of whoever made the schedule. Last year the Cardinals had to go to Arizona and San Francisco. This year they go to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

Re: spring is here

I hope kozma doesnt stand a chance.  Maybe as the last guy off the bench.  The craig adams plots ready wont take hold untill the season is about half over.  And the centerfield should be decided.  Tavarez is the loop hole that could make waves there.

My disinterest is clearly my mindset that all the decisions have already been made.  With tlr not at the helm i may be though.  There is no need for washed up players to be forced out of position or to add a AAAA infielder that unexplainable sticks on the roster.

Re: spring is here

There are still a few subplots.  The rotation certainly offers some intrigue.  There are several guys battling for spots, and the good news is that the guys fighting for those spots are good.  It isn't like some years where 3 non-roster invitees were fighting for a roster spot.

And while it isn't necessarily roster intrigue, I'm curious to see how the batting order shakes out.

Re: spring is here

I think that sums up my point fors.  Whoever the roster shapes up it isnt really headline news.  The rotation is deep.  You could take the bottom 5 and it would still be a better then average rotation.  The ellis/wong compitition is the most interesting.  Ellis could start on half the team in the majors.  If he win i dont think we will be disappointed.  If wong win it will be exciting as well.  The only real interest i have is jon jays excile.

Re: spring is here

Another thing that is semi interesting is the conversation about shifts.  MM supposively is going to use defensive shifts alot this year.

Here's your early candidate, Fors:

--LHP Kevin Siegrist skipped what would have been his third bullpen session because of soreness in his left side. Siegrist said he was "not overly concerned" by the discomfort.

Part of the managerial acclimation process:
First year - Batting order composition
Second year - Defining roles for bullpen pitchers
Third year - Defensive shifts

By year six, he ought to be able to master the always-tricky double shift.

Re: spring is here

Baseball is so simple it is hard.  Before i really got into as a fan i didnt really understand how the simple things still applied so much at a major league level.  You wouldnt think base running and situational defense would be second nature to players who have been involved in baseball for the majority of there lives.  You would think the difference in defense between 2 major league players wouldnt vary much.  Everyone should be able to field.  All that stuff isnt as easy as thought once u start paying attention.  The good teams do the eady things better and that is what makes them good.  I kind of like how spring training starts and teams go back over all little league learning tools.

Re: spring is here

It must be spring because here's an article about Ozzie and La Russa not getting along:

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/ozzie-doesn-t-begrudge-la-russa-s-hof-election/article_167a7e25-eed3-5011-9061-1a0c1af35168.html

My dad still dislikes La Russa over that.

So he's out until the All-Star Break?
