Not just any player, Suarez (a previous offender who's been punished twice for this). If Uruguay loses him to a suspension, Uruguay is probably eliminated by their next opponent. He's a brilliant and very capable player and means as much to that squad as Messi means to Argentina.

Re: Match Results

Not just any player, but Uruguay's best player. And, apparently, it's a habitual thing.

" ... replays showed Suarez apparently bite the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini as the pair clashed in the Italian penalty area. Suarez was already sanctioned with a heavy ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in the English Premier League in 2013 and FIFA can sanction players for biting with bans of up to two years."

And I doubt the "he pinched-a my ass" defense will save him.

Re: Match Results

I watched the replay, and I think he's likely screwed. He's running with the italian and clearly and purposely leans his head down and to the right to get to the back of his shoulder....

You don't see the chomp, but the Italian immediately goes down, and starts trying to show the referree a marked shoulder... Given his history, I think he might be in for a decent time out on this.

I didn't realize he was a previously punished biter until this happened, and I have to be honset.... I played soccer all through school, and many dirty things can happen when you're running with an opponent. A wide step tripping you, a free hand punching, or pulling your jersey, or something. An elbow is possibility, as is a heavy shoulder... There's really no limit here, but I've never seen anyone actually BITE someone like that, and it's pretty disgusting to me.

I kid you not, if some player bit me during a game I would beat the ever-loving shit out of that guy.  Especially if it was some clown who actually has a history of biting other players.  Red card be damned, a pummeling is in order.

Yeah it's a pretty clear bite I think, no reason to even doubt it. Third strike for this guy too. A suspension is certainly warranted, unless the referee says he saw everything and nothing was beyond ordinary in his match report which I doubt happens. He'll likely say he didn't see it.

I think after bans of 7 and 10 matches you have to be looking at a very serious punishment for this one. Banned from international competition maybe? Like, for good?

I don't expect you'll see him play in WC14 again.

Re: Match Results

I wouldn't ever excuse biting another human being, but let's not forget the Italians have a pretty long history of saying just about anything to provoke an opponent, There are more than a couple of people who think Italy's last WC title is tainted because of how they got Zidane out of the game.

6/25/2014 9:16 am  #60

Re: Match Results

There was nothing the Italian said or did to provoke Suarez. He just bit the guy.
Funniest comment came from the analyst on BEin Sports who said Suarez either needs a psychiatrist or a nutritionist.

Re: Match Results

Yeah, that was pretty crazy.  It looked like a premeditated move to get the Italian player to react so Suarez could act like he'd been shot and try to draw a penalty.

It was pretty funny that Suarez's reaction was to hold his mouth and check his teeth.  I know nothing about soccer discipline, but I can't imagine that guy plays another game in this tournament.

Re: Match Results

I think Evander's "I guess every part of the body is worth eating" twitter was the best one I saw.

Although some dude said that Suarez capped off a three course meal with a nice pasta Chillinei (Spelling) and that cracked me up.

There was also a photoshopped image of four biting Suarez stacked up on a "Hungry Hungry Hippo" board with Chillinei in the middle laying in anguish.

Re: Match Results

I don't know if this will work without a Rivals account, but I figured it was worth a shot.

I tend to read the Rivals message board for information about college football and recruiting (although this Board is admittedly more like a massive fraternity house with members from all over the country, but I digress).  I found this thread pinned to the top of the Board.

Apparently a Rivals member is purportedly a former USMNT member and maintains some role with the team.  He's been reporting from Brazil and answering (fairly candidly) pretty much any question anyone asks.  If this works, I thought you soccer guys might find it an interesting read.

Re: Match Results

Looks like something happened with the thread (a new thread has taken its place).  I'll cut and paste the first few comments on the new thread.  If it looks like something you'd find interesting, let me know and I'll occasionally update.

The guy who is purportedly part of the USMNT (not a current player) is signed on through Clemson's website.  His handle is Paws14.  He said in an earlier post that this is his 3rd trip to the WC since his playing career.  Maybe that info will enable you to identify who this might be.  Anyway, the substantive stuff.

So I'll post what wouldn't go through.

First of all I watched the game up at my cabin and I don't have the interwebz or cell service, but you can believe I was yelling from the mountain tops when I got through.

Few Questions:

1. How do you like our chances v. Belgium? And what's been wrong with them? I was super excited about watching them, but I haven't seen Hazard do a damn thing. I thought he'd be the Muller of this tournament as in the guy who really made a name for himself.

2. Seriously what is up with Bradley? Its not just bad decisions, but simple things like not getting a handle on the ball and giving up possession. Is he just in his own head right now? I know he did a few things like that nice tackle and he created a couple chances with over head passes, but I'm just a little bummed.

3. I was really excited about Brad Davis, unfortunately he didn't really get to create many chances. I hear world class crosser used with him, but would you consider him a true free kick specialist? I mean is he the type of guy who is a legit threat to score from a free kick?[/quote888]

--------------------------------------

My main man TroutBuff!

1. I love this draw for us. I think we match up well against them and I think we are the better team. Our group play sets up well for the Round of 16 because no one has faced 3 games against top notch competition like we have. They have underperformed but they made it through a weak group so they are still a contender.

2. Bradley is in bad bad form right now. He just can't get his feet under him. I keep thinking he's gonna break out and do big things but he continues to disappoint. I think he's way too hard on himself and has destroyed himself mentally. He doesn't trust himself anymore. He doesn't want the ball every single play and thats a recipe for disaster when a center midfielder doesn't want the ball. I'm bummed too man. He needs to get his shit together. He'll still start so maybe these few days will be good for him to regroup and refocus. Who knows with him anymore.

3. Yeah he didn't do as much today and looked quite out of place. He didn't look to create, he looked to get the ball off his foot. He's a great player and yes, his free kicks are world class. He can do incredible things with the ball on a set piece and can legitimately score. We didn't give him any opportunities though so he was pretty ineffective. Not bad, but not very valuable for us out there. Him and Zusi shouldn't be on the field together. I'm really unimpressed with Zusi, by the way. He's not as good as we thought.

----------------------

Yeah I did. Mix is in an awkward spot. I think he can play but he's been pretty inconsistent in games and in training so it's hard to put him out there in these close, significant games. I would like to see him get a chance but he needs a few more years to mature. He'll be huge for us in the future. And yes, we may see him later on. He's got fresh legs and can really do something when he's on his game.

Anyways, questions:

1) What has been the initial reaction from the team about playing Belgium?

2)If you had to make the call right now, does Jozy play on Tuesday?

3) Will we try and play Hazard the same way we played Ronaldo, and would you say Belgium is stronger than Portugal?[/quote888]

------------------

1. We are pumped! We wanted to play them and we think we win this game. We are better than Belgium. If we perform to our ability, I see us on to the final 8 teams in the World Cup (!!!)

2. As of right now, no. He needs to be 100% and he's just not. We need him to be able to get up to his top speed and cut and plant and twist and turn and he just can't right now. There's a few days for him to change my mind.

3. We will try to take him out of the game like we tried to do with Ronaldo. I think Portugal is stronger than Belgium. There's a reason Portugal is number 4 in the world. They are a really good team.

What do the guys like to do in their down time?

I like to know more about who these guys are since so many are asking questions that relate to the pitch.

By the way, not that you care, but my wife brought a kitten home the other day and we named it Dempsey. Bad ass IMO.

Thanks again Paws, you're awesome for doing this.[/quote888]

-----------------------

I won't separate them by position but Jozy, Dempsey, Guzan/maybe Timmy if his body holds up and his reaction is still sharp, Gonzalez/Brooks, Besler, Mix, Bradley, Green, yedlin, bedoya, fabian

Down time like here in Brazil? There is a lot of video games played, ping pong, pool, Skype with friends and family, cards, music. We've been watching vines on Youtube which has had me laughing nonstop. There is so much personality in this group. Soccer is a small topic of conversation away from training and games.

Jones, absolutely. 100%

Howard is a close 2nd. He has kept us in these games. Some of the saves he's been making are just spectacular.

Re: Match Results

Yeah I think you'll see a lot of this lines up with the detailed thoughts post I put under the WC predictions, specifically about Bradley. I know what he can create when he's playing confident, so I'm not giving up on him, but he needs to be cleaner and better. If he isn't making an outright turnover, his first touches in Germany were so bad that any type of forward run was impossible to connect with.

I'd be interested to see his thoughts on how much Belgium suffers from losing Defour to that red card, and having Kompany limping around with a hurt groin.

I've been able to sneak away a little bit and see some of the fan parties and celebrations here in Sao Paolo. That's been a lot of fun. The World Cup is one big party. There are all kinds of beach front blow outs going on. I've been with the team 98% of the time and we are trying to stay focused on the task at hand. This really is a business trip. Not a vacation, at all. I don't know if y'all heard, but I got to meet Will Ferrell last night at a fan party! Pretty cool experience

Initial guess would be Oguchi Onyewu, but the 14 there isn't a jersey number that fits, since he's #8 when he plays.

Paws,

First off, thanks for doing this.  I'm pretty much a soccer noob, but a couple of questions about the upcoming game.

1.  Who do you anticipate replacing Defour, and how big of a drop off do you think Belgium suffers as a result?

2.  With Kompany nursing a sore groin (insert joke), do you think there's a vulnerability that the USMNT can attack?  Or is he still just so good that we're still better off avoiding him?[/quote888]

1. Not sure who will replace Defour but I think the level will certainly drop off. The starting 11 for Belgium is talented but after that there's a bit of a drop off so any replacement for a starter is gonna be costly for them.
2. We are gonna exploit any possible injuries on the field. He will be tested and will be pushed. We aren't gonna avoid him as I see him being a potential weak link for them.

You aren't a soccer noob man those were some great questions![/quote888][/quote888]

Re: Match Results

I'm very curious now. If he ever played for the USMNT I would assume it's either Stuart Holden or Oguchi Onyewu. If it's a trainer or medic or coach, then I certainly wouldn't know.

Edit: Yeah neither of those could possibly be right.... Both are still active and wouldn't have time for 3 WC's since their playing careers ended.

Perhaps it's Bruce Murray, although I can't find anything that says he's a presently part of the USMNT. Only other Clemson alumni for soccer that was a name. Like I said unless he played only to college, got his degree in sports medicine and travels with the USMNT as a trainer or medical examiner....

Yes when he's on form he's deadly, as he was in some of the friendlies right before the wc started.

Right now he's stinking up the midfield
