Tony's New Pet

I hope they can wash off the Cubbie stench

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/news/story?id=5867496

Wonder if they plan on Theriot replacing Schumaker or Ryan?

Re: Tony's New Pet

i hope his defense is strong, because his offensive numbers are worse than those of schu, who was actually OK for two full seasons.

it kind of looks like we gave up too much for him, too.

Re: Tony's New Pet

You're assuming Theriot replaces Schu.  Theriot spent most of his time with the Cubs as a shortstop.  I suspect he's being brought over to replace Ryan.

Re: Tony's New Pet

Here's the Post Dispatch's take on Theriot.

"Theriot appeared mostly as a leadoff hitter last season, a role the Cardinals also hoped to address with any infield acquisition. However, Theriot's .321 on-base percentage ranked as his lowest in five full major-league seasons. He achieved a .387 on-base percentage during the Cubs' run to a second consecutive NL Central title in 2008. Theriot also has averaged 23 stolen bases the last four seasons.

Considered consistent but not rangy in the field, Theriot ranks below average in most defensive metrics but made only 15 and 14 errors at shortstop in 2008 and 2009 with the Cubs. The Cardinals received sometimes spectacular defense with incumbent Brendan Ryan but manager Tony La Russa became increasingly impatient with defensive inconsistencies he believed stemmed from Ryan's difficult year at the plate."

Did they give up something other than Hawksworth?

No

Re: Tony's New Pet

Couple other interesting nuggets from that story

- Cards sign LHP Brian Tallet as a possible replacement for Reyes

- Cards have interest in free agent Lance Berkman (Where the hell would he play?)

Re: Tony's New Pet

I've always liked Theriot. His skills are limited, but he plays hard and he'll never be a problem in the clubhouse.

I knew it. Tony can put one garden gnome on each end of his driveway. Berkman can be his lawn jockey. I don't know what other purpose he would serve on a NL team that already has a decent first baseman.

And note the column headed "most similar by age."

I agree with Artie in that I've always liked Theriot but I can't see him as an upgrade of Schumaker overall and I can't see a guy with his range playing shortstop on a team with a Duncan pitching staff unless Rolen is coming back.  Maybe Duncan will teach the whole staff to be left-handers.

He would provide steadier defense than either Ryan or Schumaker.

Exactly!

We gave up too much because we gave up anything at all.  Can you imagine trying to trade Aaron Miles for someone like Hawksworth?  Hawksworth's ERA last season looked bad because of the need to use him as a starter.  His work in the bullpen is still solid.  We may not need him, but that doesn't mean we need to give him him away for something that could have been obtained for free, or very little.

I still expect them to make a move for Tejada, or someone else who can start at 3B if needed.  So, I see Theriot at 2B more than at SS.

Re: Tony's New Pet

Per a friend of mine who is driving home, Mozeliak was just on the radio in St. Louis.  Said Theriot was brought to St. Louis with the plan that he be the starting shortstop on Opening Day 2011.

Also said that the team is seriously considering Berkman for right field.

Can Corby cover 85% of the outfield.

They sure are putting their cards (as in Hoyle) on the table about dumping Brendan Ryan.  Are we going to wind up picking up his salary just to get someone to take him?  Or is this all a big game to cover-up that they hope to unload Schumaker but don't want to appear eager?

If it's the former, it certainly confirms what fors heard about how determined the coaches and LaRussa are to be rid of Ryan.

Berkman in right field makes sense, so long as we sign Manny to be a late inning defensive replacement.

Not really.

Hawksworth's numbers out of the bullpen last season were:

1-4, 4.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, .301 BAA with 9 HR allowed in 48.2 IP.

According to the P-D story, Hawksworth was out of options.  If he didn't make the team out of spring training, they'd have to send him through waivers to get him to the minors.  Making the team next year was far from certain.  Franklin, McClellan, Motte and Boggs almost certainly will be there.  That leaves only 1 spot for a right hander.  With Salas, Lynn, Sanchez and maybe Riefer on the way, Hawksworth was expendable.

Re: Tony's New Pet

I hope this works out,  I like him even if he was a cubbie.  I am not sure why they traded to get him if he was going to get waived.

Because they are in a competition with Kansas City to see who can make the stupidest, most asinine acquisitions?

I need to read these post before offering my opinion.  I figured Theriot was a Miles replacement not a Ryan replacement.  And Berkman is a worst idea.  Worst then all that is  Brian Tallet.  First off who the hell is he and how can you stay in the majors when you allow a HR ever 2 innings you pitch.

Theriot for opening day SS?  Puke

Berkman for RF? Puke.  I wonder if he isn't insurance, in case the team feels they need to trade Pujols.

I didn't say he wasn't expandable, just that we should have been able to get something better for him.  The article even said something about how the Dodgers were not going to offer him a contract, and that the announcement was made moments before announcing signing Uribe.  Could we have had Theriot for nothing at all simply by waiting another hour or two?

I am not sure where you are getting his bullpen numbers, but if you look at the season log on yahoo stats, you can see that he started very well, had a medium May, but still had an ERA of 2.35 until a couple of really bad outings, then got moved to spot starter and then regular starter and his ERA went through the ceiling.  After his stint as a starter, he allowed 8 earned runs in 20.2 IP, for an ERA of about 3.4, which ain't terrible for a long reliever pitching in August and September, especially when you combine it with his 2.35 for the first 7 weeks.  Look at two things, they were using him as a long reliever, instead of a 1 inning setup role, and he no doubt went through some wild oscillations in his daily workouts as injuries took out Lohse and Penny, and I think you could pitch his numbers as a very credible setup man in a town that needs one.  We don;t, but that doesn't mean we should 'trade' him for a guy who was headed toward being released.

I don't get that. I assumed Theriot would be a replacement for the LG.
When was the last time Berkman played the outfield on a regular basis, and how many knee operations ago was it?

Tallet isn't that bad, AP. Or at least he wasn't before the Blue Jays started bouncing him between being a starter and a reliever. His splits against lefties are pretty good. They might get some mileage out of him as a lefty specialist.
