That wouldnt be a bad option. Im afraid they will sit on their hands.

I think they would have if Taveras hadn't died, but they need a fail safe in case the Grichuk/Piscotty duo doesn't pan out. Even though Morse has played more RF than I thought (179 career games; including 55 in 2013, but none last year), there really isn't a perfect fit for the right-handed hitting slugger who can play right field, unless you count Nelson Cruz, which I really don't because he's trending more toward a DH. And he's too expensive for the way the Cardinals usually shop. Nick Markakis might be an option, and he'd be an especially nice fit defensively, but, again, the price tag may scare off Moz.
Giancarlo, of course, would be the easiest fix, and he's undoubtedly available since the Marlins this week said they're going to build around him and he's unavailable, but those jackals in Miami would probably insist on a piece of the Gateway Arch in any trade with the Cardinals.

He's hasn't been the second coming of Roberto Clemente, but he's a solid 5-tool player who at 24 still has his best years ahead of him, you would figure. Strikeouts are decreasing, so that's a good sign. Problems with acquiring him are, a) he's a local boy who is very popular with what passes for the Braves' fan base, so Atlanta would want a lot in return, and b) he's a FA at the end of 2015, so any deal would have to involve a contract extension where negotiations could get tricky.
But I agree it's worth a shot. I think he'd flourish in St. Louis.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Got to kick the tires on that.  Just depends on what they want in return.  I assume a outfielder and martinez.  Maybe a throw in as well.  I agree about the team becoming to right handed.  A right hander would still be needed.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Atlanta has a surplus of outfielders. They have Justin Upton, they're paying BJ Upton a ridiculous amount of money, so they have to play him, and they need to make a spot for Evan Gattis who is going back to the outfield.

Rumor is they want pitching.

I don't see them making this deal without miller or lynn being involved, unless we give Atlanta 3 legit prospects and a high draft pick, which I like a lot less than losing Miller or Lynn...

With a couple exceptions that I don't understand, you can't trade draft picks.

I don't think Heyward costs you 3 players. He's had a couple of down years after an exceptional 2012. Plus you're only guaranteed getting him for 1 season.

I'd give them a major league starter and a prospect, but not much more than that.

"they're paying BJ Upton a ridiculous amount of money"

I read an article in the Boston Globe the other day that indicated the Braves would love to trade away B.J. Upton. That's like saying a guy with V.D. would like the burning sensation in his pecker every time he takes a leak to go away.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Thoughts on Andre Ethier?

His last couple of years haven't been that good. I haven't followed the Dodgers close enough to know if that was the result of injury, an over-filled outfield or general decline. He was a pretty consistent hitter for about 5-6 years prior to 2013.

Also, Artie, what are you hearing about Cespedes?  Sounds like he's worn out his welcome in Boston and he's likely to be moved.

Probably a little bit of all of the above on Either. He's owed a ton of dough over at least the next three years, with a vesting option of $17.5M if he reaches 550 PAs in 2017. The Dodgers probably realize they need to kick in some salary if they want to move him. Or Kemp or Crawford, for that matter.
I've read rumors that Cespedes ignores whatever advice the Red Sox' coaches give him, and he's not been a very popular player in the clubhouse. He's got one year left on his contract at $10.5M. His bat would be a nice addition, but he's mostly been a leftfielder. I suppose you could move him to center, and platoon Jay and Grichuk in right.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

If cespedese has an attitude problem I doubt the cardinals go for him.  Why cant he play right field if he can play center and left.  I know it js a different angle but still.

Either might be okay.  Last year was really his only horrible year.  Might be a good time to buy low but I wouldnt take on more then half of his salary.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

I got to thinking about cuddyer, why wouldnt he take the 15.3 million offer over 20 million.  He is basicly saying he doesnt believe on the 2015 market he would be worth 4.7 million.  Makes no sense.

He's an east coast guy and was high school friends with David Wright. Apparently he really wanted to play with the Mets and took less money to do so.

Well i comend him for that.  Really can believe the Col gave him the offer.  He just doesnt seem that worth it.

Well, Shane-o won't be the big right-handed bat off the bench again next year ....

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Mlb trade rumors had the twins interested in borjous.  The cardinals have 4 outfielders who can play center.  It is a position they could deal from.  However i like the late inning defense they could put on the field.

Unless there's a really good offer, I'd hang onto Bourjos this season. He's still relatively cheap, and he's still an elite defensive player. You're right about their defense. If you're going to have to spot Holliday more as he gets older, a late-inning outfield of Jay/Grichuk in left, Bourjos in center and Heyward in right would be epic defensively.
And I still wonder if he's ever been completely healthy during any part of the past three seasons. I know right now his 2011 looks like a fluke, but if he could ever put up numbers like that again, he'd be a valuable asset.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

I assume walden and tosenthal are the 8th and 9th inning guys.  Maness is ur rally killer/7th inning guy.  If they could add to that the bullpen could be a really good.  Their infield defense isnt bad and as listed above the late inning outfield defense can get to most anything.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

They really need to make a run at Andrew Miller. The Giants and Royals built nearly indestructable bullpens. Sometimes things don't go as you plan and your bullpen inexplicably sucks, but the strikeout potential of a Rosenthal, Walden, Miller bullpen would be really stupid.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Im not completely against bringing motte back.  Just depends on his market value.  I know he sucked last year but he is a flamethrower coming of tj.  That was to be expected.

Sounds like it might take a four year deal to get Miller.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Im sort of suprised about the market on sandoval.  I figure the 95 million mark will increase but at 5 years it isnt that bad of a deal.  Sandoval to me looks like a guy that will rake forever,  his defense at 3rd is shocking but the team that signs him will need to keep an opening at 1st or dh in the coming years.  5/95 seems fair.  Fair suprises me.

Also what is the opinion on ryan ludwig part 2?  He is a right handed bat that could platoon the corner outfield spots and likely cover firstbase.  Health has been his downfall the last 2 years.  I think his days as a regular/semi regular player are over.  Heyward's ability to play center would basicly let MM sub ludwick for jay.  He could also spot start heyward in right and holliday in left.  Im sure he could platoon at first.  He would be a bat with alittle pop off the bench as well.  I think in 300ab, picking your spots, he can hit 10hrs.  He also has the cardinal factor.  Returning for part 2.  He is a good guy and probably not bad for the clubhouse.  Certainly has been a troublesome person.   The only thing ludwick cant do is play third.  Carp is going to play 180 games there in 2015 anyway.  If he gets hurt there is nobody on the market that can replace him.
