The Brewers have called up a guy named Tyler Cravy to start. I hope Matheny stops putting Molina fifth. You can't have a guy slugging .335 batting fifth.

My morning paper has Blazek starting tonight. I had a pretty good idea that wouldn't happen.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Tyler Cravy ...

Joe West is a wicked pissa umpire.

Is Steak & Shake any good? Is it like a Sonic, or more like a Chili's or a TGIFriday's?

I can't figure out if the crowd is booing Braun, Rosenthal or Joe West.

Well that ending didn't suck.

It's amazing, but doesn't really fit those restaurants. Think diner. I spent many 2 am mornings there after playing music.

I love late night diners, but my lifestyle and the people with whom I ordinarily dine have inhibited me from going to one for the past two decades or so. There's nothing like going out for scrambled eggs and processed pork products after a night of drinking.

I haven't been to a late night diner in a long time either. Steak N Shake wouldn't serve me breakfast at 3 am, which pissed me off. So if we were hungry for eggs, we had to go to a truck stop or Huddle House, the Midwestern version of Waffle House.

I think Steak n Shake's originated as one of the car hop sort of places. Think American Graffiti where you'd pull up and a girl in roller skates would take your order and bring it to you car. So I guess in that sense it has some similarity to Sonic, but the quality of the food is better.
As a kid, I remember loving Steak n Shake, but it was always more expensive than the other fast food joints (again, better quality food) so we didn't eat there too much.
Nowadays they don't do the curbside service anymore. They have a drive-thru like regular fast food, but an inside diner with an actual waiter. The food is usually pretty good.

Sonic is a relatively new phenomenon here. When the first one in Massachusetts opened a few years ago, there was a line about a half-mile long on the highway just to get into the parking lot. My wife and son went and said the food was terrible.
I'm not a big Chili's or Applebee's or Friday's fan. They tend to do a lot of things, but none of them well. But I'm not a restaurant snob like my dad, who won't go to a restaurant if there is more than one of them. I like Uno's for the deep dish pizza, and Bertucci's isn't bad is you stay away from the pizza. I haven't been to an Outback in years, but I remember thinking they made a pretty good steak.

Steak n Shake is really just a burger joint. Like most burger places, they also have a chicken sandwich or chicken strips, but they're thing is their Steakburger. They also make a good bowl of chili, and they do a range of real ice cream milk shakes (hence the name).

Like Fors, my family didn't eat there because of the cost. Now it's one of the cheaper places to eat.
I never enjoyed going to Sonic because I don't really care for eating on a patio or in my car. I never went there for anything other than a strawberry limeade or Blast(c).
As I've gotten older I've become more picky about restaurants, but that's just because I'm always looking to try something new. Where I grew up, there were about two non-chain restaurants within a reasonable drive. Mid-Missouri is not exactly a hotbed of culinary excellence, so any time we would venture into St. Louis, we'd go to a chain buffet, Olive Garden, etc. I get annoyed with people who judge others for going to these restaurants because sometimes going to a new place is a risky proposition. You can read all the Yelp! reviews you want, but that doesn't mean you're going to like it unless you someone has recommended it to you personally.
Plus, any sort of snobbery towards a person's personal preferences grinds my gears.

Depends on who you're feeding. It costs me about $15 just to feed Bob if we stop there.

LOL, I'm still in the position of not worrying about feeding 15-year-old defensive lineman. And for my own sake, I've dropped most of my overeating habits. When I was 19, I was eating a Grilled Stuft Burrito, Nacho Bell Grande and Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell when I was feeling gluttonous. More than 10 years later, I'm still roughly the same size I was then, but it's a miracle I'm not completely overweight.

It isnt cheap even to feed a 5 and 7 year old girl. Thats 10-15 extra bucks. If anyone is ever in effingham stop by niemergs. The food is simple but good. If you eat there for lunch you can eat a good plate of food and a kickass salad bar. I can hadly eat my meal after feeding off there bar. And this isnt my dumb stick ass saying some hole in the wall place is good. This place is actually a nice place. Right off the interstate.

AP, are you familiar with the Effingham area? When I was a kid there was a truck stop near me called Bobber Cafe. I always remember on the place mats they listed Effingham as their other location.

Yeah it is the biggest town around me. About 40 minutes away. Ive never heard of a place called bobber cafe. Although bobber cafe is an excellent name for a truck stop. Not as direct as blow jobs and sandwiches but more clever.

I want to know what the closest major highway is to Effingham, and if you take the downtown exit, does it mean you're "getting the Eff off the Interstate?"

Interstate highways 57 and 70 meet in Effingham. Just look for the giant cross.

Ha! Well, when I checked Google maps it says the Bobber in Effingham is now a Flying J. They turned the Bobber I was familiar with into a Cracker Barrel, which was an upgrade because Cracker Barrel is great for ingesting 6,000 calories. There used to be some great truck stops along I-44, but Flying J and some others bought them all out.

" ... the Cross Foundation that built it says that 20 million people drive past the cross each year, and that a percentage of those people will see it and become good Christians, and that makes it all worthwhile."
So, the theory is that a van full of murderers, rapists and thugs will be driving across the country, suddenly see this humungous thing "thrusting (their word, not mine) heavenward" and convert to Christianity?
Under the same rationale, the Jews will pick up a few converts from visitors to Manhattan who eat a corned beef sandwich at the Carnegie Deli.
