Re: 6/23 GC

You guys are on your own tonight. I'm going to see Rush at the stadium where the Bruins play that's named after whichever bank is sponsoring it this year.

Re: 6/23 GC

Basically, Cardinals ' pitching has been holding up better than I thought it would . Just finding ways to win otherwise. Old School ........

You wonder when the younger guys are going to get gassed, though. Wacha looks like he's already starting to wear down a bit. Tsunamy has been their second-best starting pitcher this month, but he'll suprass his season high in innings pitched in his next start. Garcia's history is his arm could fall off any moment, and Lynn is coming off his forearm problem.
And there's not a lot in Memphis to back them up. I hate to be the eternal pessimist, but there's a lot of season left and a great deal of open water between the Cardinals and the playoffs.

Yes , you make good points about the reality of it all. I think many teams have those same issues. I guess the one(s) with the fewest go the farthest. So is this where good managing comes in, or is it just outhouse luck , or a little of both. Cards have made it to the postseason 4 years Mathenyging .

"So is this where good managing comes in"

So the Cardinals are screwed.
Really, I think game management has been very good this year. At least I seem to find myself asking "What the heck is he doing?" far less often. One of the things I think we all got used to with La Russa was his consistency, even if that could be maddening at times. I remember a series against Boston in '03 when La Russa's priority was not letting Manny Ramirez beat him. Unless the bases were loaded, the Cardinals were going to pitch around Manny. La Russa never wavered. Same thing with Ryan Howard when he was in his prime in the late 2000s. He just stopped getting pitches to hit.
Matheny is more prone to playing hunches, which I like, but sometimes in the past the hunch was hard to fathom. This year, it seems like he's making more educated guesses, and it usually works out for him. I guess that comes with experience.
And the players seem to both like him and respect him, which is a significant accomplishment. Managing the clubhouse these days is probably a bigger component of the job than game management.
