No cheering in the press box
All the statisical evidence gives me an ice cream headache, but I'm quite sure the author's conclusion is valid. The Cardinals probably aren't even the the best team in the state of Missouri.
But, I'd give the story a little more credence if the author didn't write for a paper that covers the team that is supposed to be the best team in baseball, or at least the best team in the National League.

Fuck it. No reason to play the games. Lets let Neil Greenberg and his Iphone tell us who gets to play in October.

And that's the part that drives the sabrematricians crazy. Sometimes, things you can't predict happen on a baseball field. Sports involve human beings, not math equations. Sure, if the numbers hold, the Cardinals win the World Series in 2004, but they also lose to the Tigers in three in 2006, and they're quickly and quietly suffocated by the Phillies in 2011.

Eh, I read a lot of sabermetric stuff and I don't think the unpredictable really bothers people. And I understand a lot of what Greenberg is saying, but he's being clumsy. The Cardinals' xFIP is going to be higher than their normal ERA because they suppress home runs at a ridiculously low rate. But it isn't really "lucky" that they suppress home runs. They play great defense and strike out a lot of batters. It's not really a mystery.
