Through eight. 112 pitches. Philthies lead, 5-0.

Either of the last two outs could have been hits. Ross (!) hit a fly ball to left center that was caught at the base of the wall, and Schwarber hit a sharp comebacker to Hamels. He looks like he's on fumes.

Russell grounds out, Fowler takes a called third, and Bryant hits a warning track fly ball to center.
I don't get it? "The Cardinals added Cishek to the roster Saturday, bolstering a bullpen that's been heavily used, and optioned rookie lefty Tim Cooney to Triple-A Memphis."
Cooney is LH! and he was doing good? No one else to get rid of? Kozma had been mentioned as almost useless lately?

Martinez seems very calm today. Maybe too calm.
I know, it something to do with "rights/options" etc. too many Pitchers vs. position players? Cooney would be brought back for sure? SEPT callus? Post season?
I suppose I would rather have Kozma than pay some highly paid, over-rated, bad-fielding DH style big "bat" rental. It is almost satisfying to keep winning with smaller payroll.
Miller appeared to be missing target but still throwing strikes?(away vs. in or vice-versa) yet still getting calls?

Guy batting third has one homer?

Garcia is going to take Cooney's spot in the rotation. Sending Cooney to the minors now gives them an extra arm in the bullpen until they activiate Garcia, when they'll send down either Tuivailala or Socolovich.
The only reason Koz is still on the roster is because he's out of options. In fairness, he's the best defensive shortstop in the system. They really can't sit Peralta if they bring up Garcia or Anna. And Alex Mejia needs to play every day. There's no reason to bring him up so he can sit and watch.,

All right - the 16 guys in the Hall of Fame who have pitched for the Cardinals:
1. Gibson
2. Dean
3. Eckersley
4. Sutter
5. Musial (Thanks, Verducci)
6. Alexander
7. Smoltz
8. Carlton
Those are the easy ones.
Stay tuned ...

OK, I had to look these up:
Cy Young (won 45 games for the Cards in 1899 & 1900)
Vic Willis (played with the Cards in 1910, the last season of a 13-year career)
Hoyt Wilhelm (1957)
Dazzy Vance (1933-34)
Kid Nichols (1904-05)
Jesse Haines (1920-37)
Burleigh Grimes (1930-34)
Pud Galvin (1875, 1892)
Three-Finger Brown (1903)
That's 17. I guess Verducci isn't counting Smoltz because he doesn't go in until tomorrow.

Isn't in. But by the standards that have been set, he should be.

I disagree that Greg Garcia can't play short. He's not Omar Vizquel, but he's probably not a .140 hitter either.

Is it me, or was Miller a better hitter when he was in St. Louis?

I didn't say he can't play short. I said he's not as good defensively at shortstop as Kozma. But Garcia is not going to play ahead of Peralta or Wong, so he's probably better off in Memphis as long as they're not going to DFA Kozma. Why? I don't know. Because they think the Pirates are going to pick him up and he's going to hit .429 for them?

This is the "Randal Grichuk was taken one pick ahead of Mike Trout" portion of the broadcast.

Reynolds ain't bunting, Verducci.

That gonna be enough?

So does Choate get the 9th. ?

I'm shocked Matheny had the stones to pull Molina.
My bad, Artie. I see what you were saying now.

Maness?
Hmmm. It's like bullpen roulette.
