He's 4-8 (granted, with the White Sox), and he's on pace to set career highs in ERA, walks, and home runs allowed.
Look, the Cubs got a decent pitcher, and they're going to win the division, but they gave up a lot - including their best prospect - to get him.

Re: Trade deadline

On the subject of trades, Zach Duke pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Memphis tonight.  1 K, no hits, no walks.

Who's on the block, Siegrist or Lyons, or both?

Gonzales also pitched well for Memphis.

Cant argue with that.  I wouldn't trade the cubs places for what they gave up.  I do think it should put the Cardinals in their place as to what they should do

Peralta got released by the Red Sox after going 8-for-40 in the minors.

Is Lyons out of options?

Yep.  Unfortunately.  I'm a big fan of Lyons but I think he's been a victim of poor use by management (M & M) and injury problems.  Of course there is no way of knowing how much, if at all, his injuries have been caused by the way he's been used.

Re: Trade deadline

Speaking of trades, Grichuk has gone back on the DL with back problems.  J. Martinez recalled.

I wonder if they will be able to get anything for Grichuk in a trade or if he is just going to wind up getting released?

I doubt they flat out release him but i doubt they recieve much for him either.  At best he is a throw in piece in a larger trade.

Re: Trade deadline

Looking at the stanton contract....

He most certainly is worth the 25-26 million he is owed per year untill after the 2020 season.  The question is if he is worth 27.25 million for 8 years from the age 30 to 38.  He could opt out after the 2020 season.  Imo that (considering typical rise in contracts) is about the same that pujols got.  I would guess that 27mill will about be his market value at 30 years old and an 8 year contract is likely.  His odds of opting out (which imo would be club beneficial) is 50/50 odds.

If the cardinals want a true middle of the order bat why not go for the best middle of the order bat in the league.  It is rumored the marlins could eat some contract and the Cardinals have the money.  I think this is a very tempting situation.  My opinion is take the contract and give up less in the terms of prospects.

Or kelly for stanton and they kick in 30mill.

Worth 25-26 million per year?  You have got to be kidding.

On this day, July 17, 2017, I predict that Carson Kelly will retire with more WS rings than Stanton. Total post season appearances for tie breaker.

Re: Trade deadline

Its a large price tag but if you want a middle of the order bat that is proven it is the price you are going to have to pay.  I bet harper gets it.

Harper's contract will dwarf it. He's going to hit free agency at 26. He'll break the AAV record which is $31M. Machado will probably get $30M/year as well

I thought of the age factor after i posted and i agree.  To figure out stanton trade worth you really have to look at his contract as two separate contracts.  Pre and post opt out.

Pre opted out -
Stanton is owed 7 million for the remainer of 2017.  Thats a no brainer.  He is worth that.

3 years 25.6mill per yesr.  Stanton will be 30 in 2020.  To me this part of the contract is a bargain.  Ive stated before my opinion that players opting out can be a good thing.  In this case it would be.

Post opt out-
7 years 31 mill a year.  I counted the 10 million buy out for the 8th year.

At 31 years of age what kind of contract do you think stanton will demand?  7 for 31 isnt out of the question.

Re: Trade deadline

Spending that kind of money to add Stanton to this team would be like making a top of the line dirt bike a present to a quadriplegic.

Is he going to carry this team the same way he has the Marlins?

It would be a good start. Then go get a SS who can play defense. Hitting is optional.

Re: Trade deadline

Our old buddy Jaime Garcia's stop in Minnesota certainly was brief. Now he's a Yankee. I hear the doctors up there are superb.

It's a good fit. I'm sure pitching at Yankee Stadium in front of all those patient fans is going to work out just fine for him.

Re: Trade deadline

It probably is a tremendous break for him.  I've already been thinking the odds are about 60-40 in favor of his winding up as commentator on ESPN or the MLB Network.

Of course I also thought the odds were about 80-20 in favor of Tito Landrum becoming a t.v. star after he gave up the game.

Re: Trade deadline

Assume the Cards don't make a trade before Tuesday dealing one of their current outfielders.  With Piscotty coming back this week (I think), who do the Cards they will have to make a roster spot.  What are the best 5 choices among the following:
1.  Pham
2.  Piscotty
3.  Grichuk
4.  Bader
5.  Martinez

Based upon what i've seen so far, I think sending Bader back to Memphis is a no brainer to let him work on hitting the slider.  But when Fowler comes back, who is the next to go down?  Again, assuming no takers in the trade market.  And, if so, who would you trade?

Also, the Cards are now carrying 4 lefties in the pen.  Duke, Siegrist, Cecil, and Lyons.  Tuivailala continues to pitch very well for Memphis and, IMO, would be an improvement to the current pen.  None of the four lefties can be optioned out and, IMO, the two weakest are not tradeable.  How would yoiu restructure the pen?

Re: Trade deadline

Pham should be traded if there is decent return.  That is the definition of selling high.  Much the same can be said of grichuk.  They are both movable.  Martinez has no value.  The club wont give up on piscotty and fowler isnt going anywhere.

When Piscotty comes off the DL, it will be like trading for an All-Star at the deadline.
