With yesterday's callups, he now has approximately 4,529 players available. I'm not sure there's ever an excuse to not get Sierra into a game, either as a pinch-runner or a defensive replacement, though I acknowledge an outfield of Pham, Fouler and Piscotty/Grichuk is decent defensively.

Are you counting Carpenter and Piscotty?

Somehow this is as close as they have been to a playoff spot in a long time. Maybe since the all star break. Still my mind goes back to taking just one game from the cubs. It is a pretty good bet that the up coming 4 game series with cubs decides the outcome of the season.

Carpenter is a liability anywhere you put him on the diamond. And I'm getting a little tired of McLaughlin apologizing for him because he supposedly has an injured shoulder. I guess Dan needs a new boyfriend after Adams got traded. That and the nightly musing about how many home runs DeJong would have if he didn't start the season in Memphis.

They were tied for first place on August 12, then lost eight of their next 11. They're not going to win the division, so they need the Brewers to lose. Which meant rooting for the Cubs last night. Which was strange.

Hopefully the cards make for yesterday debacle today. This team is bound to be a tease in the final weeks.

I doubt it. I expect the Cubs to come to St. Louis intent on not only clinching at Busch, but eliminating the Cardinals.

Recalling from football to baseball today. Biggest thrill of the day is my fantasy team projected for 160 points.

Cubs might not have much left to finish off.

The Cubs are going to be pissed when they see how the Reds threw away their game against the Brewers, who scored two runs because Votto couldn't be bothered to get to the bag quick enough to receive a throw from Gennett on what would have been the third out of the third inning.

They intentionally drilled Pham , and he later came out of the game . If Matheny doesn't drill Rizzo tonight he is gutless.

I suppose one could make an argument Martinez started the whole thing when he plunked Bryant, but that didn't look intentional, nor was it a situation for a HBP.
But I'm relatively certain there will be no response from the Cardinals' dugout tonight, other than Methany tipping his cap to Maddon while the Cubs are celebrating on the field after they clinch the division.

I would say that CMart lost command of everything he threw up there . 90 plus pitches in 4 1/3 is pretty bad . Cubs are fortunate Bryant was the only one who actually got hit . He came close on three or four others .

Edmonds made a salient point (I know, I know) that when Martinez gets in trouble, he tries to punch his way out with fastballs and he loses command. Of course, we've been saying pretty much the same thing here for three or four years, but it's nice to see our observations validated by someone with a microphone.

So glad I had to work late and didn't get to see those cocky jerks celebrating on DeWitt's field.
