I hate "sports" that require a judge to tell me who wins. I can't watch figure skating, but I heard that an American skater finished behind two skaters who both fell. I know nothing about figure skating, and even less about how it's judged, but it would seem to me that a significant part of the score should be based on whether or not your ass hits the ice.
I did, however, watch the half-pipe skiing (or whatever they call the event Shaun White was in. I think I was half watching to see someone break their neck and half to watch the tricks. The stuff they do is crazy.
And seriously, who invented curling? How boring does life have to be in the arctic regions of the planet that sliding a rock across a sheet of ice became a sport?

Agree that judged sports are not of interest to me. My problem is i can tell the difference between good and bad. And good and absolutely great. But good, gooder and more good all look the same. So does great and more great. And the line between more good and less great is blurry.
There are some exception for me tho.
1. I like the trick stuff too. It is entertaining for about 20 minutes and then it all looks the same.
2. I like bull riding. It all runs together to but i like it. I like the animals as much as anything. They are big masses of muscle. The breeding is impressive to me. Growing up around cattle i guess causes some of the interest. Also you have to hold on for 8 seconds. So there is a line drawn as far as acceptable and unacceptable.
3. I will watch boxing or mma if the mood strikes me. Someone getting there ass kicked is an easy judge.

I like curling if it is an american team involved. At least i have rooting interest in a head to head match up. The Olympics bore me in part because i have to watch 15 countries i couldnt find on a map sled down a hill just to see the one american attempt to compete and most generally fail.

You're not riveted by a Norway v. China mixed doubles curling match?

I'm not sure how this is exactly how it was explained by the commentators, but apparently you get more points if you try more difficult jumps and land on your ass than if you play it safe and stay upright.

The Bruins were on last night so I watched hockey instead of the men's halfpipe, but I watched the women's halfpipe the night before. I'll stand by the post you wrote and I agreed with 10 minutes ago about judged sports being bogus, but even I - and I watch snow sports every four years - could tell the American girl who won the gold medal was so much better than everyone else in the competition.

Completely agree on the US girl. Funny thing about the men's competition, before Shaun White left the gate, Bob turns to me and says, "is there any doubt in your mind that if White stays on his feet he'll get a better score than the guy in first?"

So if I could somehow attempt this on skates I should win the gold medal even if I break my neck, right?

Hosmer to the Padres. 8 years, $144M, with an opt out after 5 years. If he opts out its a 5/$100M contract

He wont opt out and the padres wont get their moneys worth. Im not disappointed he will not be in stl.
Motte to the cards on a minor league deal...whatever that means.

Depends on which Hosmer they get. I didn’t realize he was only 28. He should be in his prime years for performance. At his best, Hosmer is a .300 hitter who can hit 25 HR, drive in 100 and play Gold Glove defense. $20M/year is the going rate for a very good player, and Hosmer can be a very good player.
If he reverts back to the guy who only hits 15HR/season, it’ll be a bad deal.

Hard to argue against that. I do feel like the cardinals will only allow themselfs one 20mill contract in the near future and i dont want that guy to be eric Hosmer. My hopes are higher then that. Im still in denial about harper. I want to believe he will come to stl. I dont even like him but he is a dickhead the cardinals need. And i think he could be like jim edmonds....you like him if he is on your team. Never happen but i dream.

I think your "feeling" about the Cardinals is spot on, and that's troubling. There isn't any reason they can't take on more than one $20M/year contract. I'm not saying they should have signed Hosmer, but assume for the sake of discussion they did. In 2019, Hosmer's contract simply replaces Wainwright's. Clearly Hosmer is better than Wainwright, and if they made that move they could try to off-load Gyorko somewhere which would save them an additional $9M. Instead, they're content to be mediocre.
Your dream about Harper might turn into a nightmare. Not only is he not likely to be a Cardinal, there's been some suggestion that he wants to join Kris Bryant on the Cubs. Both are from Las Vegas, and I'm pretty sure they're good friends. Only problem is the Cubs don't have a lot of big money coming off their books anytime soon (unless Heyward actually opts out). They'd likely have to absorb a luxury tax hit to make it work, and who knows if that's something they're willing to do.

Be an interesting offseason next year. There is of course:
Bryce Harper (26)
Manny Machado (26)
Clayton Kershaw (31)
Then there is another group of:
Andrew McCutchen (32)
Charlie Blackmon (32)
Josh Donaldson (33)
The group of super utility players is healthy and might make gyorko hard to move. Also looks to be alot of unmployed players. That trend will continue unless the marginal players start to understand their value and the second tier players get a grasp on their ranking.
I assume the cardinals have a plan. I assume this offseason reflects those plans. I also know the saying about assuming things.

Yeah, next year's class is super deep. There are also several players who could exercise opt-outs. David Price is one who comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others.
In addition to the names you mentioned, others potential free agents next year are Dallas Keuchel, Adam Jones, Brian Dozier and Yasiel Puig
And the closer market is really deep. Cody Allen, Andrew Miller, Craig Kimbrel, Dave Robertson, Zach Britton and Jeurys Familia all could be on the market.

Doizer has deffinatly made himself a legitimate middle of the order bat in the last few years. I must have missed him. The others, Adam Jones and Yasiel Puig types...i dont really see them as the type of player the cardinals need or that they would make a meaningful difference if signed. Likely alot of mlb teams feel the same way depending on the asking price.
I was thinking about price earlier. He has 4 years 127mill remaining. No way he opts out of aav of 30 mill plus in that loaded market.

Actually, Dozier is the Twins leadoff hitter.

AL baseball isnt my following.
Just looking at the states it seema like a waste to have him leadoff.

"Be an interesting offseason next year. There is of course:

So here goes: The Cardinals "kick the tires" on Machado but decide to stick with Paul DeJong at shortstop and Gyroko at third, despite DeJong's regression in 2018 to .250/15/55 and the near certainty Gyorko will revert to the power hitter he was in the second half of 2016, despite little evidence to back up that assertion.
Kershaw is dismissed as "too old," then signs with the Cubs and wins 24 games on their way to a second straight World Series title and their third in four years.
The Cardinals go "all in" on Harper, offering a contract they know he'll reject but use as leverage to sign with the Dodgers.
The Cardinals' premier off-season signing is a left-handed relief pitcher from Saskatchewan who once at an entire bowl of chocolate-covered cockroaches.
On the first day of Spring Training in 2019, Moz pats himself on the back for keeping the powder dry.
