Yeah, he's a short, but muscular dude.

Cardinals batter with 11 strikeouts today, 5 from Bader and O'Neill.  I have a feeling it won't be the last time this team hits double digits in strikeouts in a game.

Re: Spring Training Crap

Weaver and Gomber both looked pretty good today.
Some guy for the Red Sox just walked three batters in a row. I can almost hear Harry Doyle in the radio booth saying "Ball 12 ..."

Re: Spring Training Crap

Motte's fastball is cruising in at a tidy 91-92 mph today.

Re: Spring Training Crap

I'll admit I know next to nothing about Yairo Munoz, other than the fact he was one of the players involved in the Piscotty trade, but if he could have a decent spring, it would seem that a guy who plays 2B/SS/3B/OF might have some value with Matheny deciding to carry 37 pitchers on the roster.

Re: Spring Training Crap

Wainwright 50 pitches and 5 baserunners in 2 innings.

Sounds like he’s in mid-season form.

So, the two biggest question marks in the rotation got roughed up.  When does reality become apparent?

Looks like the pd and cardinals coaching tried to put a positive spin on wainos outing.  The artical isnt worth linking to.  Wash, rinse, repeat...2016, 2017, 2018

If you're hoping for them to sign one of the remaining free agent pitchers, you might as well stop wasting your time.  They've already said they aren't going to do that.  They'd turn to internal candidates (i.e., Flaherty, Reyes) before they sign one of the free agents.

I think they should be in the market for them, yes.  I dont expect they are or will be.  At some point tho they have to realize they over value their club and system.

They've been doing this for more than a decade.  I doubt it stops anytime soon.

To your point, I looked at their draft picks from 2003-2012, using Baseball Reference.com as the source.  These are the Cardinals draft picks who had more than 1,000 MLB at-bats, 50 starts or 100 relief appearances (for any MLB team).  I stopped at 2012 because no one drafted after that point met the criteria

2003
Daric Barton
Brendan Ryan
Anthony Reyes
Jason Motte

2004
None

2005
Colby Rasmus
Mitchell Boggs
Jamie Garcia

2006
Adam Ottavino
Chris Perez
Jon Jay
Allen Craig
David Carpenter
Tommy Pham

2007
Daniel Descalso

2008
Brett Wallace
Lance Lynn
Sam Freeman
Kevin Siegrist

2009
Shelby Miller
Joe Kelly
Matt Carpenter
Trevor Rosenthal
Matt Adams

2010
Tyler Lyons

2011
Kolten Wong
Seth Maness

2012
Michael Wacha
Stephen Piscotty
Kyle Barraclough

Based on that 10-year track record, why should I expect that the current farm system is stocked with future All-Stars?  I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just not convinced.

Re: Spring Training Crap

The thing is that there are some names on there that at one point had decent trade value. Anthony Reyes was highly regarded. Rasmus had tons of value. Matt Adams after his first season. Piscotty after 2016.

They’ve convinced themselves that anyone they trade will be the next John Smoltz or Jeff Bagwell, but so far all the organization has produced is the next Clayton Mortenson or Brett Wallace.

I think motte is being given a favor since he is involved in the stl community.  Like a one year bonus.  He might get a call up but i expect him to be in Memphis mostly.

In his defense, Yadi contributed to the damage by making a really bad error that led to their 3-run inning. Bowman looked pretty good and Gregerson looked even better. Motte was hitting 94-95 on the gun, but the book on him has always been his fastball is so straight is has to be in the 98-99 mph range for him to be effective.
I don't know if Adolis Garcia is going to be any good, but from 15 rows away he looks like what a baseball player would look like if you built one out of a kit.
I've always resisted going to spring training because I didn't think I'd enjoy a baseball game if no one cared about winning. My instincts were right. Watching baseball on a 75-degree day in Florida isn't a bad deal no matter what, especially considering the weather in New England this past weekend, but I think I'm going to save my dough for games that count from now on.

Nice to hear a first hand account that isnt sugar coated.  Were you there today to see martinez steal home?   Going to try and find video of that.

"The runnin’ Redbirds, who have swiped 13 bases in 11 spring games, pulled off their double steal for their first run in a two-run fifth."

Just saw it. Voit broke for 2nd. Martinez headed home when the catcher threw. The catcher one-hopped the throw and the SS couldn’t come up with it to throw home.

Consider the source, but Hummel wrote earlier this Spring that Garcia had the highest ceiling of any of the outfield prospects.

Just saw his RBI single. Ball sounded like it exploded. Not sure how I feel about the comparison, but Ankiel (doing the broadcast with McLaughlin) just compared Garcia physically to Alphonso Soriano.
