Nice to hear a first hand account that isnt sugar coated. Were you there today to see martinez steal home? Going to try and find video of that.

Like I wrote, there are worse things to do than watch a live baseball game in early March in Florida. It just wasn't my vibe. The four guys in front of us were talking about the golf game they played that morning. They basically paid a $65 cover charge and $10 a beer to have the same conversation they could have had at any bar in Orlando. The couple to the left of us got up and climbed over us every inning for concessions and/or to go to the rest room. The only two players of the ones who made the trip to Orlando the woman sitting to Zach's right had heard of were Fowler and Molina. And she was wearing a Cardinals' hat and t-shirt. I know it's a spring training game, but geez.

Incidentally, the first game I ever saw in person between two major league teams was an exhibition game in Little Rock between the Cards and the White Sox.  Since I was a month short of 12, it was tremendously exciting for me.  Of course it helped that I had gotten my picture taken with Stan Musial (by butting in on a press photography session uninvited) just before the game.  It was actually a pretty good game since it was only a couple of days before the regular season opened and the teams were pretty much playing their regulars like it was a regular season game.  The Cards had a new centerfielder named Wally Moon, who had made it possible for the Cards to trade Enos Slaughter to the Yanks a month or two earlier.  Even though Moon was from Bay City/Trumann, Arkansas, you didn't hear as much about him as would normally be the case.  Perhaps it was because he was replacing such a huge Cardinal favorite and they were letting him come in without a spotlight.

On opening day a couple of days later, Moon homered in his first at bat.

The following year, I got to see the same to teams play under the same condition in Little Rock.  Although Moon had been ROY, the Cards had a new centerfielder named Bill Virdon, who had been obtained in the Slaughter trade.  Moon had moved to left and Musial to right.  The Cards first baseman was a 6'5" rookie named Tom Alston, who was their first Black player.  The also had a highly publicized rookie shortstop named Alex Grammas.

I learned just a couple of days ago that Moon died a few months ago.  I have not seen any notice taken of it in the Cardinal media that I occasionally read.  And the picture of him with the article a friend sent me showed him in a Dodger uniform.

Tuesday Morning:  I checked the baseball register last night and discovered that Alston and Grammas were rookies the same year as Moon and not the same year as Virdon.

p.s.  I had to post something.  I haven't been getting any notices of postings to this thread, even though I was told by the system that I was already subscribed to it.

Re: Spring Training Crap

I never knew Moon, Grammas and Virdon came up with/played for the Cardinals. I associated Moon with the Dodgers, Grammas as a base coach with Sparky Anderson's Reds' teams, and Virdon as a manager for the Pirates.

Had a chance to watch a little last night. His stuff looked decent. Wisdom bailed him out of the first innng by starting a double play on a ball that was hit like a rocket, but he otherwise looked fine. He needs to ditch that stupid looking porn-stache he’s got working.

Verlander looked amazing. DeJong got him for the HR, but thru 3 innings Verlander had 8 Ks and had still only thrown about 40 pitches.

Wacha had a rough time today.  Seem to be a theme.  Lack of hitting a spotty pitching.

I didn't recognize Brebbia, either without the facial hair or the guy who got lit up for four runs in one inning. Maybe he needs to go back to carrying his umbrella around.

Re: Spring Training Crap

Who's going to go?  Munoz is really making a case to be on the 25 man roster.  I can't see them trading J. Marinez.  One option would be send Bader down and use Munoz as a back-up outfielder.  Or they could trade one of the following:  G. Garcia, Carpenter, Wong, or Gyorko.  But Garcia, Wong, and Carpenter are their only left-handed hitters.

Or they could drop the plan to carry 13 pitchers.

Re: Spring Training Crap

It should be noted that Carpenter managed to go from 1st to 3d on a double.

With or without further injury?

It's hard to tell at this early stage.

Looks like Carpenter has still got his launch angle.

Look on the positive side. If he keeps hitting the ball out of the ballpark, he's in little danger of getting passed on the bathpaths.
Wainwright gave up one unearned run today in what Hummel termed five "dazzling" innings against people wearing the uniforms of the defending World Series champions. Not good news in this instance. Matheny will send him out for at least 15 starts during the regular season, even if his ERA remains hovering around 12.00.

In fairness, the first 5 hitters were regulars: Springer, Bregman, Altuve, Correa and Gonzalez.  You have to consider that a good result. Hopefully he threw harder than 82.

Re: Spring Training Crap

Carps thoughts on hitting:

“For lack of a better phrase, I was selling my soul for home runs,” he said. “I’m not going to hit 50. So why am I selling out for 50? That’s not who I am. I am not a .240 hitter. It kind of opened my eyes that I want to go back to being that guy. If you had shifted me as a young player, I would have looked at that and hit a ball to shortstop. I didn’t have that in my game last year.

“A lot of that is an approach thing.”

“I would be happy with 15 homers, 50 doubles, and hitting .300 than hitting .270 with 30 doubles and 30 homers. That’s me,” he said. “That’s what I want to get back to. I want to be the guy who can hit .300 with 50-plus doubles and 15 homers. Maybe 20.”

Re: Spring Training Crap

My thoughts on reading that fluff piece on Carpenter were:  "Poor slob.  It's really rough being the last one to know."

Team didn’t score today, but Flaherty pitched well. Looks like he made one bad pitch.
