4/5 Home opener crap

Isn't the home opener usually a day game?

Yes.

I was at St. Louis for the home opener weekend (missed opening day) in 1980 and they were all day games.  But I still almost froze my butt off.  My daughter, who was just a few days short of 10, came down with the flu.

I had an argument before the Federal Court of Appeals that Monday and damn near missed it because all of the power was out in the homes in the suburb where we were staying.  A very heavy snow had knocked out most of the power lines.  I don't know if they were scheduled to play in St. Louis that night or not because we had to get back to Memphis.  But I remember think at the time that Federal law should prohibit MLB games being played north of Memphis before April 15.

I've been to one opening day at Fenway, in the mid-90s. Thankfully, it was a relatively warm day. The Red Sox have their home opener this afternoon and the folks who attend won't be as lucky. It's sunny, but only about 40 degrees and really windy. It's going to feel like December.

I hope it's Hicks. Who needs a guy who can throw 100?

They're going to have to build tiered seating in the bullpen.

I don't want anyone affiliated with the Cardinals to become Bill Belichick, but at some point someone has to tell Wainwright he's not helping the team by starting every fifth day.

Too much. Loved that he started into his home run trot on a ball that barely made the warning track. You're playing in a real ballpark now, with big league dimensions, and not in Chicago. Though some of us still wish you were.

We were out last night, so I didn't get a chance to see any of the game, though I have the festivities recorded.  According to the P-D's website, Wainwright's fastball averaged about 92 mph in the 1st inning.  By the 4th inning it was down to 86.

Matheny isn't going to stop running him out there.  Moz needs to pull the plug and put him back on the DL.  The reality is, Wainwright hasn't been good for a long time now.  It isn't going to get better.  This team isn't good enough to forfeit every 5th game.

His curveball is still a moderately effective pitch, but last night the Diamondbacks unless they had two strikes were spitting at it and waiting for his fastball. He can't get anyone to swing and miss at his fastball or his cutter, so his pitch count kept building and it took him more than 90 pitches to get 11 outs. He would have been out of the fourth without DeJong's error, but it was probably a blessing. Matheny would have tried to nurse the fifth inning out of him because the pitcher's spot was due up in the bottom of the fifth.
And while I agree with you about Wainwright needing to be removed from the rotation, I hope that doesn't obfuscate how putrid the offense was last night. Not to take anything away from Robbie Ray, whose slider was breaking like a whiffle ball, but outside of Yadi's at bats, I don't think the Cardinals made solid contact more than a half-dozen times. These guys strike out way too much, especially when they need to put the ball in play. They had a chance to tie the game in the fourth with runners on second and third and one out, and DeJong takes a fastball right down the cock for a called third and then Munoz looks like he's trying to chop wheat with a scythe by flailing at a pitch in the dirt. Two of the most pathetic at bats I've ever seen.

He never should have been allowed to come off the dl.  I can not stress how much i hate mike matheny.

Waino, i like waino.  I agree he is no longer a starter.  He would be good in the bowman role....well what the bowman role should be (have a mention i hate matheny)..which is mop up, middle innings and multipal inning situations.

At least as of tonight, I'm still able to access it without subscription.  But I have been trying not go to their web site exciept when I feel desperate for something to do that will keep me from being productive.  I don't think I accessed their site more than 3 times after the season ended until Spring training was in full swing.

Re: 4/5 Home opener crap

Any word on how Sheriff is doing?  It looked to me like he took a real shot off of the leg on Thursday.  I sort of expected them to put him on the 10 day DL and call up Gomber.
