Prospects update

The Redbirds broke a 4 game losing streak today.  O'[Neill hit his 12th and 13th homers.  Hudon pitched pretty well but it took him 96 pitches to get through 5 innings and he gave up 6 walks.  Guilmet picked up a two inning save.  Sheriff struck out all three batters while giving up a hit in an inning of relief.

https://www.milb.com/memphis/news/oneills-two-homers-carry-redbirds-to-victory/c-276717630

Right now, it looks to me like the Cards need to clear some roster spots.

Correction:  Obiously Sheriff faced more that 3 batters if one got a hit and 3 others struck out.  I can't fiigure out who inserted "all" in my sentence.

Re: Prospects update

Knizner's ascendance further puts Kelly in a precarious spot. Kelly is wasting his time in AAA, but it makes no sense to bring him up to the big leagues for another two years to back up Molina. The best thing that can happen for him and the Cardinals is he uses the next 3-4 weeks until Molina's nutsack heals to show he can hit at the major league level and the team can get some value for him in a trade.

Good to see Edward Mujica is still active. I always like it when the Red Sox throw a barrel full of money at a player who performed well with another team and then the player stinks when he gets to Boston.

Agreed.  My fear is that he's going to confirm the concern that he can't hit at this level.

I've been saying the same thing, tho perhaps not here, for weeks now.  Perhaps they could persuade some team to take Carpenter and Fowler in order to get Kelly.

This might be a good thing for Molina as well.  He was really dragging his butt behind the plate in the past several games.  Maybe he would be a little less eager to stay in the line-up if he didn't have to worry about giving Kelly an opportunity.

Gomber hasn't looked the same since he got to spend a few days on the big club's bench.  He got hammered for 8 hits today and the Redbirds lost to Nashville 7-4.  Wisdom was 3 for 4 and got thrown out stealing.

Geez-us. Just being in the same dugout as Matheny makes a player worse.

Honestly im unimpressed with kelly.  Id trade him and hope the next over hyped prospect is better.

Id love to see the team dealing carp and fowler.  I dont see it as a possibility but i dream.

Re: Prospects update

Ryan Helsley pitched a gem today for Springfield.  7.2 innings, gave up one unearned run.  i'm not sure why he's still in Springfield.  He previously had 1 start at Memphis and gave up 1 run in 7 innings. I believe he was one of the guys that was hitting 100 on the gun at Spring training. Randy Arozarena and Lane Thomas each homered, 4th and 9th, respectively.  Thomas is only hitting .248 but also has 7 SB's.  I saw him used as a pinch runner in one of the Cards' ST games, but don't know much about him.  He looked like his uniform was too big.

Arozarena is hitting .396 since being sent down from Memphis.

Re: Prospects update

These updates are informative.
I've been trying to think of a comp for Arozarena since I saw him play in Florida. My first thought was Lonnie Smith, but Arozarena may project as a better defensive player with more pop in his bat. Then I looked up Lonnie Smith's stats and it turns out he had a really good career. I don't remember him finishing second to Dale Murphy in the '82 MVP vote, and I certainly don't remember him hitting 21 homers for Atlanta in '89. Though that number is such an outlier - he never reached double figures in home runs any other season - you tend to think his fruit punch may have been spiked.

It doesn't happen a lot. You pretty much have until you're about 25 to make your way through the minors, and then it's either up or out. There are some notable exceptions, like Jose Martinez. If it's a weathered guy like Mujica, who is currently in Memphis, chances are he's a guy with a track record who the Cardinals think they can fix.
Not too long ago, MLB clubs that had affiliations with the PCL used to send their best young pitchers to AA so they wouldn't get demoralized by pitching in the high-altitude parks, but that's not as much of a factor since the PCL merged with the American Association about 20 years ago and the PCL teams these days span from Nashville to Sacramento.

Re: Prospects update

Hudson pitched a strong 6 innings for the Redbirds today.  Knizer was 2 for 4.  Currnetly hitting over .360 in a limited number of at bats since being called up to Memphis.

Guilmet turned in another strong relief appearance.

Re: Prospects update

I never heard of this guy (playing for Springfield) but he is tied for the minor league lead with 14 homeruns.

Wisdom is now hitting over .300 but has only hit 3 homeruns.  Surely somebody would be interested in giving him a shot.  I wonder if the Cards are asking too much for him.

Re: Prospects update

Once again, if they are to continue carrying the same number of pitchers, they've got some tough decisions (especially for the players involved): To come off the DL, sooner or later.
1.  Lyons (soon)
2.  Reyes (soon
)3.  Martinez (apparently later)
4.  Gregerson (apparently later)
5.  Wainwright (much later -- not really a factor)

Eligible to option without having to pass through waivers:
1.  Brebbia
2.  Mayers
3.  Hicks
4.  Gant
5.  Weaver
6.  Flaherty
7.  Reyes

Also, they will have to make a place on the 40 man roster for Reyes even if the comes off the DL and goes to Memphis (which I doubt)..

Finally, after having a rough start his first game after being returned to Memphis, Gomber pitched 1 hell of a game last night.  Eight scoreless innings.  Charged with a run in the 9th after a runner who he had put on base scored on a sacrifice fly.  Another lefty, Austin Warner (who is about 6 inches shorter than Gomber), pitched a 9 inning shutout for Palm Beach (high A).

p.s.  Wisdom hit his 4th homer and went 1 for 3.  I can't understand why the Cards don't use him in a trade.  I guess they are asking too much.

Looks like Roache is a former first round pick of the Brewers who got dealt to the Dodgers and then released. Six hundred and four strikeouts in 1,857 ABs. I bet when he connects, the ball goes a long way.

Yeah, I'm sure the Cardinals are asking a ton for a guy who isn't among their top-30 prospects and who they left exposed in the Rule 5 draft.

Right now they're using 12 pitchers.  Assuming they stay at that number, and assuming Martinez is out for a bit, once Reyes returns the rotation will be Wacha, Mikolas, Weaver, Flaherty and Reyes.  The more interesting question is what happens when Martinez is healthy.  If I had to guess, either Flaherty, Weaver or Reyes head back to Memphis.  Of course that assumes the others are healthy which is never a given.

Assuming health, the bullpen will include Norris, Holland (ugh), Hicks, Cecil, Lyons and Tuivailala (unless they trade him).  That leaves one spot.  If healthy, it's Gregorson's.  If not, I assume it's up for grabs between Mayers, Bowman, Gant and Brebbia.

In terms of opening up a spot on the 40 man, if Kelly returns, they can DFA Baron.  If not, then I would expect them to try to make a move among the redundant right handed relievers.

Re: Prospects update

See my post in other thread about piggybacking startes.  In the quick hits the author had it penciled out.  Something like

Mikolas
Cmart
Wacha
Weaver
Flaherty/reyes
Mikolas
Cmart
Wacha
Weaver/flaherty
Reyes
Mikolas
Cmart
Wacha
Flaherty/reyes
Weaver

Idk something like that

Re: Prospects update

I forgot about Bowman being optionable.  From the way he's pitching lately (before going on the DL), I'd say he's a strong candidate for being optioned.

So we can add his name to both lists, as someone who will be coming off the DL and someone and someone who could be optioned.

In light of AP's report, it looks like they will be keeping all three (Weaver, Flaherty, and Reyes) even after CM returns.  That to me means Gregerson is out of a job unless there is an injury.

BTW, who said anything about asking a ton for Wisdom?  By definition, if the price is too high for there to be any other takers it is too high.  The only other possibility I can think of is that the Cards are simply holding on to him as insurance for worst case scenario.

Somehow he has earned an insane amount of matheny points
