Can someone explain to me why a pitcher with a 96 mph fastball pitches with such timidity?

At some point, the Cardinals might want to think about acquiring a first baseman who can catch a baseball.

Dan and Al can stop with this "big market" nonsense. The Cardinals have averaged more fans than the Red Sox the past dozen years.

Oh thank goodness Because solo home runs from the leadoff spot are such a valuable commodity.

Ryan Helsley just finished 7 innings allowing only 1 run, unearned, 1 bb, 10 k, 3 hits for the Redbirds.

A lot of the slow pace of this game is on the home plate umpire.

Matheny has 16 righthanded pitchers in the bullpen but not one he thinks can retire Ryan Braun and his .230 average.

After Albers made Carpenter look foolish on two changeups, did Carpenter think he was going to get a fastball on 3-2?

Munoz yanked a low-and-away pitch over the fence in left for his first career home run. Which was nice. He also made a good play from deep in the 5-6 hole to throw out a runner.
Carpenter had a bunt single against the shift on a 3-0 pitch, and then hit a homer over the right field fence. It seems that he likes the leadoff spot in the batting order.
Other than that, I can think of anything.
Is it true the Cardinals haven't so fart this season thrown out a runner trying to steal? I think Hrabosky said it twice yesterday, so it must be true.

Yes.  But I believe he or Whiskey Dan also said that they have had the fewest stolen bases in the NL this season.

That may change after the way the Brewers ran wild on Pena yesterday.

Whatever carp is hitting is better then what he was.  I agree with the frusteration over leadoff issue.  I also dont like pham leading off tho.  I absolutely love his base hit bunts.  I hope he keeps that up.

I hope fowler ends up on the dl.  I think it makes the cardinals better in the sort term by removing him from the 25 man roster and maybe the long term if time off resets him.

With munez and gyorko.....how pointless is it to have wong on the team?  Hopefully he has some value.  Id have a wong give away day.

Wong, Pham and Molina are the only plus defensive players on the team, probably in that order at this point. The Cardinals have horribly mismanaged Wong's development, from putting him on the playoff roster in 2013 when he wasn't nearly ready to signing Mark Ellis in case he failed to giving him a 5-year extension he hardly deserved, because they want people to think they're smart because they lock up young players before they become arbitration-eligible.
An organization run by people with more acumen would have waited to call him up until at least the middle of 2014, when Wong would have ascended to the team organically, and then had the manager write his name at second base at the top of the batting order in permanent marker. Now, they've got a broken player whose confidence wavers with every at bat and every play in the field.

Re: 5/28 GC

I agree that wong is a hell of a defender and that the org has jacked up his development.  I think he could have success with another team, maybe.  He is still pointless to have on this roster.  I dont think second base is a position you use a completely usesless offense player just because he is a good defender.  When dejong comes back and proves he is ready i believe the combination of

2nd base : gyorko, carp, garcia, munez

Ss : dejong, munez, garcia, gyorko

3b : gyorko, carp, garcia, munez

Is an appropriate depth chart.

I think you have to address defense at first base as this point. Martinez has cost the Cardinals almost as many runs with his glove as he has produced with his bat. He's directly cost the Cardinals at least two wins because he can't field his position. He cost the Cardinals three runs yesterday, again because he can't catch a baseball as well as the average high school first baseman. As mediocre as Carpenter is at first base, he's not going to cost you a ballgame per month there.
Once DeJong comes back, I would go with an everyday lineup of Carpenter, Wong, DeJong and Gyorko. It's not a great defensive infield, but on most days it will be at least competent.

Re: 5/28 GC

I cant pencil in a guy as an "everyday player" when he is batting .177 in 124 at bats.  I just can't do it. Maybe at shortstop if the player is ozzie smith good.  At second base....no fucking way.  Id let greg garcia play everyday first.

Re: 5/28 GC

Also i agree one first base.  Maybe martinez is marketable.  They would be selling high imo.

I know crazy thoughts but trading for a legit first baseman and playing carp at second (his best defensive position imo) would be great.

Re: 5/28 GC

Because of the cardinals moving part they could really trade for any infield position.

Believe it or not, because of defense, Wong has a higher WAR than Martinez.

My point was if they just left him alone, he'd probably be a decent every day player. He's never going to be Robinson Cano, and he's always going to do stuff that makes you crazy, but he's better than a .177 hitter.
