Re: 7/11

As frustrating as the Cardinals are to watch, if I subjected myself to this White Sox team on a daily basis, I'd probably end up sticking knitting needles in my eyes.

At least he had the good sense to decline the invite to the All-Star game this year so he could rest.

Have you ever seen a guy hit more balls to the warning track? Seriously.

Never.  I’ve never seen a left-handed hitter hit so many fly outs on pitches on the outside corner with the whole left side wide open.

You just don’t understand smart baseball

"There's this whole narrative of 'Why don't guys just hit ground balls to short?' The answer is: (a) It's not that easy and (b) it's the complete thing you've taught yourself your entire baseball career to avoid. If a guy has a chance to hit a homer and a double, and he goes up there trying to slap a ground ball to short, the other team is perfectly fine with that.“

Who wants to waste an opportunity to have some bimbo show your homer on the MLB network at 7 a.m. the following day?

Re: 7/11

Colorado is currently beating Arizona 19-2 in the 6th. Descalso took over pitching in the 5th, which begs the question—has a position player ever started pitching earlier in a game?

Edit- meaning a position player who isn’t also a pitcher. Babe Ruth doesn’t count.

Yeah. He pitched 1 inning. Not sure if he got hurt or if it was performance. He gave up 4 runs

Re: 7/11

Making his fifth career pitching appearance and his second of 2018, Descalso got the call in the fourth inning. He had yet to allow a baserunner or a run. That changed when Nolan Arenado safely reached base, snapping Descalso’s streak of nine consecutive batters retired to start his career. It was the longest streak by a position player in the live ball era. To make matters worse, yet another streak was broken two batters later.Carlos Gonzalez took Descalso deep, hitting a three-run home run to snap the infielder’s four-game scoreless streak. It had been the longest by a position player since Doug Dascenzo went four straight from 1990-91. In 2.2 innings of work, Descalso allowed three earned runs off of four hits, striking out one. Descalso became the first player in team history to pitch more than 1.0 innings and recorded the most innings pitched by a position player since Jose Oquendo threw 4.0 innings in 1988. He was also the earliest position player to enter a game as a pitcher since Sal Bando did it in the fourth in 1979. But the D-backs weren’t done using their position players just yet. Following Descalso’s outing, catcher Alex Avila got the call. It’s his first appearance as a pitcher. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time a team had two position players pitch was in 1945 when Rene Monteagudo and Jimmie Foxx pitched 4.1 and 2.0 innings, respectively, for the Philadelphia Phillies. The Rockies held on to take home the 19-2 win over the D-backs.

Re: 7/11

I'm not sure if this is really a big story or if it's just an effort to get people to subscribe to the Athletic, but this was just about the only story being talked about this morning.

I have no intention of subscribing to the Athletic, but according to Bernie (who also writes for the website), the story goes deeper than Norris simply harassing Hicks.  Apparently Norris also serves as a spy/snitch for Matheny, and players have been fined based on information/incidents that Matheny hasn't witnessed personally, but about which he learned from Norris.

If that's the case, both Matheny and Norris should be gone--immediately.  From the information in the NBC Sports story you linked, Matheny supports the harassment of Hicks as some ritualistic suffering that rookies need to go through.  That's bad enough right there, but if Matheny is also employing players as snitches, both he and any player used in that role need to be removed, and the sooner the better.

I'm not saying that all of the poor play is due to Matheny and the clubhouse atmosphere, but if I'm the front office, I'd sure like to see how the players respond to 2-3 months without Matheny before making my off-season decisions about who stays/goes.

Re: 7/11

The only thing that gives me pause is the inclusion in the report that Hicks missed meetings during ST and appears to live by his own timetable. If Hicks is acting like, let's face it, a 21-year-old kid who has been promoted from Single A to the big leagues almost overnight, then maybe some oversight from a veteran isn't a bad thing. If that's what's happening and making a big deal out of it is the Athletic's way of selling subscriptions … well, it wouldn't be the first time.
But, and from Matheny's and Hicks' reaction I suspect this is what's happening, Norris thinks his mediocre tenure in the majors somehow gives him license to bully and haze a younger player, then I'm angered.
The other troubling aspect is the way our "leader of men" seems to be leading his men. That he hasn't talked to Fowler "in months" is not quite as disturbing as the notion he's using a snitch but nevertheless mystifying. He sees Fowler every day. Is it so hard to call the guy into his office or pull him aside on an airplane and say "Hey, let's do what we can to get you right again?"
