No doubt, but it’s a shame he won’t embrace being a 3 hitter. He’d have almost 100 RBI.

Yeah, then you have ozuna killing every worm that pokes his head out. Not sure a guy who has been a singles hitter and nothing more deserves the cleanup spot.

Yes, and it's showing up in the standings.
On May 15, Carpenter was batting .140, his frequently-referenced nadir. The team was five games over .500 (22-17) and one game out of first place.
Carpenter is currently batting .282. The team is four games over .500 (59-55) and is 7.5 games out of first place.
Since Carpenter has gone on his hitting tear and become an MVP candidate, the team is 37-38 and has dropped 6.5 games in the standings.

I'm not sure who else you would put there. Maybe Martinez. DeJong last night hit his third home run since May 24. On a good team, Molina is a 6th-place hitter.

Be interesting to see teams average run scored in those time frames. Surely the team is scoring more. Either way, i see your point but relating one players performance to the team overal performance is always a subject that can be split a million different ways.

Those were the two names my mind went to. Maybe nobody deserves the appointment permanently. I certainly do not think ozuna has done anything to set himself apart, except maybe one series. Dejong, if my memory is correct, was hitting for good power before his injury.
In 180 less plate appearance batting lower in the order dejong has 3 fewer hrs, 2 more doubles and 2 less walks then ozuna. I assume his rbi total would be closer to ozunas if he had the same amount of opportunities.
Martinez beats him in all categories.
Im not argueing that ozuna should never be in the 4 slot. Maybe he, the player that replaces him and the team overal would benifit from the cleanup spot being wrote in pencil and not ink.

I understand your point, and it's admittedly a simplistic and unfair way of judging Carpenter's contribution. But if the nattering nabob in the broadcast booth is going to on a nightly basis promote Carpenter's candidacy for Most Valuable Player, the announcer at least ought to consider the player's overall value to the team. Last night's home run was big, no doubt, but you could make an argument it may not have ended up being the winning run if he doesn't watch Riddle's ground ball in the fifth inning roll past his feet and into the corner for a triple, and Riddle doesn't score later in the inning to make it 2-0.
Referencing Mags' comment a couple of weeks ago about Ralph Kiner, the first time I heard it was in reference to Andre Dawson winning the NL MVP on a sixth place Cubs team. If Dawson had played somewhere else, the Cubs probably still would have managed to finish last.

No arguement from me that mvp should come from a playoff team. Probably a division winner.

Was looking for the stat and couldnt find it. Bernie posted it. 26 of carps 30hrs are solo shots.
