Yankees Sign Soriano

Tons of cash, haven't done anything to make the team better...why not? And if you're the Tampa Rays, you've gotta feel bad, right? Wrong. Because of that, here's where they are picking in the draft:

24th (compensation for Crawford)
31st (compensation for Soriano
32nd
38th (compensation for Crawford, again)
47th (compensation for Benoit)
50th (compensation for Choate)

Plus, they'll have another pick in there somewhere in the supplemental round for Soriano. So the Rays will have seven of the first 50 picks. Given how good they are at drafting and developing, I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up drafting an All-Star or two.

Re: Yankees Sign Soriano

Didn't Mel Brooks once say: "It's good to be da Yankees."?

Re: Yankees Sign Soriano

I would have like to see the Cardinals sign Javier Vazquez for the 1 year 7 million deal he got.  I know that is alot of cash but him replacing Loshe in the rotation would have been sweet.

Re: Yankees Sign Soriano

It's unlikely Vazquez would ever sign here without drastically overpaying him.  It's pretty well documented that he likes to be close to Puerto Rico or the Dominican (whichever is home).  That was the primary reason he signed with Florida.  He turned down more money from other teams.

Re: Yankees Sign Soriano

Cashman says that he didn't recommend the Soriano deal and that spending $35 million for a middle reliever is not an efficient use of money:

Re: Yankees Sign Soriano

Also, I thought I read that the Rays have 11 picks in the Top 90. In five years, we might remember it as the beginning of a dynasty. The '11 draft is that good and the Rays are that good at drafting/developing.

Interesting.  How many people go public and basically say, "I know all you people think this move was stupid, and I just want to let everyone know it wasn't my idea, it was my bosses'" and get to keep their job?

I think the Gm throwing his own player under the bus is a perfect way for Soriano to start his career in New York.
