You say that, but Wheeler has won more games over the past two years than the other guy on the Mets who has a pair of Cy Young Awards.

Hudson and Wainwright won more games than Flaherty who won the same number of games as Gant.

Who was the best pitcher among the 4?

Understood. And part of my problem with Flats is he usually pitches well, but he doesn't win enough games. There's no way anyone will ever convince me that wins don't have meaning. And if deGrom pitched in, say, Arizona or Texas or Tampa Bay or for another middle-of-the-pack team in a smaller city with less influential media, he wouldn't have won back-to-back Cy Young Awards.

I don't think wins are meaningless, but it's a deceptive stat.  Felix Hernandez was able to win a Cy Young  (and almost won a second) pitching in Seattle.  I think advanced metrics had more to do with deGrom winning back-to-back CYAs than where he played.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

I don't follow stuff as closely as many do, but it seems the "Quality start" metric has fallen into some disfavor. I think something like QS at least potentially is a better and more objective reflection of what Wins tries to represent.

Kind of strange. Wonder if pham wore out his welcome again

Sounds like it was a money issue.  Pham is set to receive a decent contract and Tampa doesn't have the cash to pay those.

I liked pham.  I think a team can use an arrogant prick at times.

Apparently Blake Snell wasn't a fan of the trade either.  I'm sure this will promote clubhouse harmony

"We gave Pham up for [Hunter] Renfroe and a damn slapd--- prospect?" Snell said during a Twitch stream early Friday morning in a moment that was captured and shared on social media.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

In the biggest shock of the off-season, Matheny hires John Mabry as his hitting coach.

Matheny also apparently can’t get rid of his Rusty Kuntz.

Strasburg - 7 years, $245 million to stay with the Nashnils.
Can't wait to see what Gerrit Cole gets.

Bud Norris might be available to mentor the young pitchers.

Think the owners were worried about a collusion claim after the last couple of years' markets moving slowly?  Money seems to be getting thrown around pretty freely this off-season.

What could possibly go wrong giving a pitcher a 9 year deal?

$36-freaking-million a year. For nine years. For a pitcher. Merry Christmas Boras. I don't anticipate any complaints from Cardinals Nation that the team didn't make serious offers to him or Strasburg. But this probably inflates MadBum's and every other decent starter's value, so get used to standing pat...

Or you acknowledge that baseball teams are making historic amounts of money and the claims that the team is unable to afford a higher payroll is complete nonsense.

I wish I could pay only $1,00/gallon for gas, but every time I try to tell the gas station that I think they overvalue their product they ignore me.  At some point, if you want to own a baseball organization, you have to acknowledge the cost of talent.

Excellent. Those long term, big money contracts usually work out well for the Angels.
