4/28 Gamecrap

I'll be spending a scary amount of time focused on the NFL Draft, but here are tonight's lineups

The Cardinals' lineup:

1. Descalso, 2B
2. Freese, 3B
3. Pujols, 1B
4. Holliday, LF
5. Berkman, RF
6. Rasmus, CF
7. Laird, C
8. Greene, SS
9. McClellan, P

Astros' lineup:

1. Bourn, CF
2. Sanchez, SS
3. Pence, RF
4. Lee, LF
5. Wallace, 1B
6. Hall, 2B
7. Johnson, 3B
8. Quintero, C
9. Figueroa, P

The Rasmus-Freese switch is interesting

I call bullshit on that. You're going to use the draft as an excuse to watch coverage of Royal Wedding (which I heard referred to today as "pre-coverage." How and the world can you cover something before you cover it?)

Anyway ...
I read Raz is batting .167 in his last half-dozen games or so, which would seem to account for him being dropped.
Figueroa has been awful this year. On paper, the pitching matchup makes this game looks like a layup for the Cardinals, which - of course - is cause for near panic here.

another thought on Rasmus is that he wanted to bat lower in the order.  So this could also be seen as a move to appease him, at least L A Russa might hope that he takes it that way.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

Freese looked foolish after trying to get to third but I like the risk.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

I agreed with Horton.  They should have tried to steal with Greene.  If they did McCellan base hit would have either scored him or put him at third.  As it was it ddint matter.  This offense if fun to watch and Lance Berkman is making his old team pay.

That's what I asked.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

I think Wallace hit 11-for-13 in those three games. Seriously.

Berkman was 8-for-14 and his slugging is well over .700. That's absurd.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

The Cardinals have won 6 series in a row.  To bad they lost their first 3.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

I came home and the Cardinals were trailing, 4-1. I left to go out and they were leading, 10-4. Looks like I picked the right part of the game to watch.

I hope this offense is actually this good because this has been a fun 2 weeks of baseball.

It's an exciting team to watch, that's for sure. They were a little lucky in that they missed the wife-beater in the Houston series. Hudson, Beachey and Lowe are all pitching pretty well so far. Let's hope the bats stay hot.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

The cameras have been showing shots of Berkman, Pujols and Holliday staning around together in the dugout.  That is some freaking talent.  Two of the are already HOF locks and Hollida isnt far from it.

Re: 4/28 Gamecrap

Stupid stat of the day.

The five batters hitting 2 through 6 last night included 2 batters hitting over .400 and two others hitting over .300.  Pujols isn't among them.

Freese .358
Pujols .258
Holliday .433
Berkman .410
Rasmus .316

i don't want to spoil the fun, but there should be some regression to the mean for holliday, berkman, rasmus, and freese, while pujols should experience a a big pull back up toward the mean.  then again, if we had stats for just since AZ, pujols might be near his average.

So, my guess is that part of what we are seeing is a recipe which is greater than the sum of its parts:
good hitting breeds good hitting, and it can't hurt Holliday that he now has Berkman protecting him. But another part is just the luck of stringing some hits together, just as it seems pretty clear now that Pujols' first week or two was more bad luck than anything else.  The offense will cool down a bit and when it does we'll need the pitching to step up, particularly the bullpen.
