ATLANTA -- Cardinals manager Tony La Russa responded to the realities of a punishing schedule today by playing three position players not found in Friday's night's lineup against the Atlanta Braves.
The Cardinals won 5-3 in 11 innings after arriving at their team hotel shortly before 4 a.m. The team bus departed the Buckhead team hotel today at 9:45 a..m for Turner Field. As a result, La Russa is starting a different double play combination, Daniel Descalso and Tyler Greene, as David Freese returns to third base after Friday's game off.
Jon Jay starts in right against Braves righthander Brandon Beachy. Regular right fielder Lance Berkman is riding a nine-game hitting streak and is in play as National League Player of the Month. Catcher Gerald Laird starts after finishing Friday's win.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez sends Friday's starting eight back out this afternoon.
The Cardinals are assured a winning month despite a 2-6 start. Friday left them with a three-game win streak and needing only to split the last two games here to secure their sixth consecutive series. The Cardinals finished last April at 15-8, three games up on the NL Central. A win today would send them into May at 16-11, at least 1 1/2 games up on the division.
Jake Westbrook looks to extend the momentum built during last Sunday's six shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Westbrook, who resides in nearby Monroe County, is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two career starts against the Braves. He faced them last Sept. 10, earning a no-decision in a game the Cardinals lost 6-3 in 12 innings.
The Rest:

RF Jon Jay
3B David Freese
1B Albert Pujols
LF Matt Holliday
CF Colby Rasmus

2B Daniel Descalso
SS Tyler Greene
P Jake Westbrook
Braves

3B Chipper Jones

that sucks. sounds like they got about five hour sleep at best.
it's 1:20 here, and my alarm clock is set for 6 am :-(

Max, this is precisely the type of Larussian-behavior you talked about last week. He's putting the long-term good of the season in front of the benefit of winning today's game. They've already clinched a winning April, will have a chance to win this series regardless of what happens today, and are doing it against a non-division team.

Boggs pitching the 7th in a game the Cardinals are trailing. Interesting.

La Russa's insistence on using Batista in these high-leverage spots is both infuriating and frustrating.

Going only from the description on Gameday, it looked like every ball except's McCann's was well-hit.

That he got through it does not justify the move. Those balls were scalded.

McCann's ball went to the warning track.

OK, then every ball was well-hit?

And the Cards take the lead on a triple by Gerald Laird.

Who had Laird coming up with a triple right there?

Right before he hit it, I thought "I dunno how good I feel about needing a big hit from Gerald Laird."

Think the Braves even knew who Daniel Descalso was 24 hours ago? Now they're pitching around him.

I don't know if the Cardinals are going anywhere this season, but I'm enjoying their determination right about now. I wonder how all this is going over in Cincinnati?

I really hope the bullpen preserves this because La Russa burned three players before Theriot even took a swing.

They'll have plenty of time to think about it after Josh Johnson decimates them tonight.

He's not sending out Miggy for the ninth, right?

Phillies are already 10 games over .500.

Gonzalez and Gonzalez ejected. I bet they called the ump a fag.

I presume Alex Gonzalez disagreed with the called third strike?

Just a little bit.

Who finished the game? Was listening on the radio. Shannon said Sanchez twice and Salas three times.
