Time for Ryan Theriot to face the (chin) music
Its hard to believe that just a couple of years ago Ryan Theriot was a fan favorite. Coming off a 2008 season in which he hit .307/.387/.359 to help spark the league's best offense, "The Riot" shirts were everywhere.
However, with an ever shrinking OBP and a rising star, Starlin Castro, waiting in the wings, the Cubs traded him to the Dodgers last year.
A free agent after last season, Theriot ended up signing with the rival Cardinals and had some choice words for his former club, saying that he was "finally on the right side" of the Cubs/Cardinals rivalry and that it was good to be with an organization that values championships instead of them being an "afterthought".
This prompted Cubs catcher Koyie Hill to say that "there's probably a decent chance he's going to feel how hard the dirt is around the home-plate batters' box." Carlos Zambrano called Theriot "the enemy".
So, with the Cardinals visiting the friendly confines tomorrow, its only fitting that Zambrano will be on the mound. Its not a question of if Theriot will be thrown at, but when and how often.
Of course, Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa is old school and won't take this sort of thing sitting down, so we should expect some sort of retaliation, but its a small price to pay for putting Theriot in his place.

players can say all kinds of funny things that spark controversy. veterans must know the consequences and have plan, as was suggested for brandon phillips.

That's rich. Hill is almost irrellevant. He may not even see the dirt around "the home-plate batter's box" (where else would it be?) in this series. Let them go after Theriot. It's not like the pus Zambrano throws these days can hurt anyone anymore.

Cardinals look like they'll be going sans manager tonight.
Manager by committee will be the way they run. Works for the closer, why not?

If they really want to start this up it could get interesting with Carp and Zambrano on the mound tonight.

La Russa originally was scheduled to reach Chicago this morning; however, he remained in Arizona following Monday's exam.
Bench coach Joe Pettini will manage tonight's game.
Is it common for the bench coach to take the place of the manager if the manager is unable to manage? I figured Oquendo would get the honor. I am sure Duncan will take over full control of the pitching staff if he doesnt already have that control when TLR is around. I dont know how it will be done but I am guessing Tony will still have some effect on the game.

I thought the list of top Cardinals/Cub moments was missing Gary Bennett's grand slam in 2006. It was a pretty key sweep in a world series year. The Cardinals were coming off a series were that got broomed by the Mets. For them to get the sweep in the 9th with 2 outs and Gary freaking Bennett at the plate was huge.

Wasn't that at Busch?
I was at the Aug. 19, 1998 game, BTW.

“He’s the enemy now,†Cubs outfielder Rafael Soriano told the Chicago Sun-Times, “so we have to get him out.â€
Jeez-us Christ, Gordo. Rafael Soriano? That's friggin' inexcusable.

About being at the game? I still have the ticket stub.

Bernie stands up for us midwest hicks
Buckle up, Ryan Theriot. It could be a rough ride for the former Cub at Wrigley Field over the next few days. His "finally on the right side of the rivalry" remark in the offseason didn't play well on Chicago's North side. Over the winter catcher Koyie Hill said Theriot could expect to be knocked down, and pitcher Carlos Zambrano called him "the enemy."
Then again, Theriot may be in for some jeering when he returns to St. Louis after joining in on the fun on a Chicago sports-talk show (ESPN 1000).
When the hosts made fun of Cardinals fans wearing tank tops and cutoff jean shorts, Theriot laughed and enthusiastically added, "Tank tops, jean shorts and some Timberland boots." And then Theriot laughed again.
Wow, dude. Taking shots at Cardinals fans? The Cardinals fans who have largely overlooked your eight errors? Is that smart? Are you a double agent, or what?
And should Theriot be talking about boots, given all of the ground balls he's kicked around? Sheesh.
I know he was just joking around, but I don't see how Theriot helps himself by joining in on the attempt to reduce Cardinals fans to "Larry the Cable Guy" caricatures.

Sounds like Theriot has a little "Clinton Portis" in him.
It's all in good fun, I don't care if he goofs around a bit. Zambrano on the other hand? Well let's face it, that fucker is crazy. Not "hit you with a pitch" crazy, but more like "Throw at your mom sitting in the stands while you're at the plate" crazy.
Still though, what the hell is wrong with tank tops and cutoffs? That's not redneck apparel.... That's summer apparel... I would happily wear that, but I wear khaki's and collars to work, does that make me a redneck?
... wtf are you supposed to wear to the ballpark?

Nice. I'm sure Baton Rouge is the Beverly Hills of Louisiana, but Bernie's correct. It's poor form to make sport of the folks who help pay you a salary they could never imagine.

I'm not a jean shorts guy, but if you're going to wear them, you have to earn them. They literally have to be cutoffs. No buying them that way off the rack.
And under no circumstances can you wear anything denim to the beach. Or leather. I once saw a guy walking on the beach in a black leather vest, jean shorts and construction boots. I thought the Village People were coming to film a video.

If I want to wear shorts it is because it is hot. Khakies are much cooler to wear then jeans. I have nothing against jeans shorts but they dont seem very functional. When I think of cutoff-jean shorts I think of the nuthugger, pocket showing, skin tight paired with a wife beater tank top type.
However I wear sleeveless shirts of some type almost year around. I dont wear them in a public setting much but if I am working or lounging I almost always wear them.

I've seen the Cubs hit the ball hard twice.
It's not helping either pitcher the plate umpire's strike zone is all over the place. Zambozo struck out Holliday without throwing a pitch in the strike zone, then he threw five pitches in the strike zone to Berkman and walked him.
That's a bad call on the appeal at third base. I hope that doesn't come back to bite the Cardinals. You can't miss that fucking call in the major leagues.
Offline
Really. The third base umpire has about a half-dozen calls to make in three hours, and he fucks up one of them. And it costs the Cardinals a run. What the fuck is he looking at? Fucking jerk.

Alfonso Soriano must be one of the dumbest players to ever wear a major league uniform. You'd think after about a dozen years of playing professional baseball that he would have learned to lay off that slider on the outside corner. I don't think I've ever seen him ever make contact on a breaking ball on the outer two-thirds of the plate. I'm even not sure I've ever seen him hit the ball to right field.
