There was something in the P-D about him complaining about the mound and having to wait for the smoke from the fireworks to clear after Hernandez's home run, but I didn't see a quote attributed to him about either thing.

If Kobe can't go, that means Jay in CF against Lee tonight. Good heavens.
At least they miss Halladay in this 2-game series.

You were the first one on this, but I don't know how they haven't figured out Theriot isn't an everyday shortstop anymore. There was a play Janish made in the hole yesterday on a ground ball Theriot doesn't get within five feet of (pardon the dangling preposition).
They have to move Theriot to second base. Punto is OK as an occasional fill-in at short, but he's not an everyday guy. I've seen enough of Greene. Can Descalso play short? I don't know. But what I do know is he's got a decent arm, and he brings energy to the team when he's in the lineup.
The two biggest priorities right now are improving the defense at short and fixing the bullpen. I still have some hope that once Tallet gets back and Sanchez gets a few more innings under him the latter will be better, but I don't know if you can improve infield defense at shortstop without going outside the organization.
I know they built this year's team for more offense, but you can't sacrifice so much defense when you've got a pitching staff under the pitch-to-contact directive.
In case anyone is interested, Brendan Ryan's average has climbed 33 points in the last nine days ... to .204. His OPS has actually decreased from last season (and who thought it could?) to .525.

have you been following the neuro-linguistics thread? i have a nemesis who is holding up job performance as pertains to me, meaning i cannot perform my job because i must perform the tasks nemesis did not do--which only pertain to me. so the whole project is waiting for me to perform stuff other than those on my duty list. to perform those tasks, someone's hand (mine?) must go into the cookie jar. none of my circle of confidants here have any doubt but that this was the plan of nemesis from the beginning: if a hand gets caught in the cookie jar, the whole project will need the skills of nemesis to extract it and finish the project. if it is my hand, and if i get cut from the project, no one else will remain who possesses the experience and skill set to navigate scenarios like this, and nemesis will be free to run gamuts like this to her heart's content. meanwhile, when i directly questioned the boss if he gave nemesis any authority to do what she did, he gave a response that, according to one website, indicates a constructed auditory event . . . a prevarication.
so, yeah, i'm a bit wound up. i come here to talk baseball and shit, and not to defend whether my comparison of jay to hart was stupid, or even try to figure out what you are implying about me finding someone to blame if Rasmus misses some time.

My apologies to you and your olfactory. My all-time favorite Ohio people behaving badly story, and I have several, including a woman throwing a punch and then puking on me at Cleveland Stadium because I had the stones to wear a Raiders jersey in "her" city, takes place - naturally - in Buffalo.
Fors and some of the others know this, but I take a trip almost every year to Buffalo to see the Patriots play the Bills. I really have no interest in the outcome of the game, but it's a chance to get away for a weekend with a couple dozen other idiots and get drunk.
A couple of years ago, a member in our group bailed at the last minute (something about a death in the family) and we had an extra ticket to the game. My buddy Mike has a sister who lives in the Cleveland area and her husband drove up to Buffalo.
Mike's brother-in-law shows up, all 5-foot-3 and 95 pounds of him, just in time for the Ohio State/Michigan game, wearing his Buckeyes' game jersey, a Buckeyes' necklace (I honestly didn't know what a Buckeye was until I saw chestnuts hanging around this guy's scrawny neck) and his game face. There's really not that much interest in college football in New England anyway, and I think OSU had already locked up the Big 11 title and was a prohibitive favorite in the game, so it wasn't even a big deal to the handful of guys in our group who might have had a middling interest.
The rest of us are not-really-watching the game in the hotel bar, making all kinds of noise, kind of noticing that the Wolverines are unexpectedly hanging around in the game, and may even win it. So Mike's brother-in-law, who from this point after is known as "Douche" for the rest of the weekend, stands up on a barstool and orders all of us to calm down and pay attention to the game. He's legitimately pissed. So we laugh at him.

To put things in perspective, when I moved to LA in 1985, employers LOOOOVED people from Ohio (and Illinois and the rest of the upper midwest) because we know how to work. We don't call in absent because surf's up.

There are two Illinois to me - Chicagoland and everything else. And the "everything else" part is what I consider Midwest. And Midwest people are generally laid back and nicer than people in the East.
Ohio has all the shitty things about the East - rude people, heavy industry and the faster pace, with none of the history or alternatives some of the other states have to offer. Ohio is like New Hampshire, without people from Massachusetts to pay their taxes.

Ok, so the Douche is annoyed because we weren't into the OSU/Michigan game, and by this time he's piss drunk because he weighs about as much as my mother-in-law and he's from Ohio and he's not going to let a bunch of Massholes drink him under the table. He pukes in the bar, so Mike takes him upstairs to their hotel room and lets him pass out.
We figure he's done for the night, but a few hours later he rallies and decides to come with us to Canada for a night at the ballet. He's wearing this stupid Hawaiian luau shirt (under his Buckeye necklace, apparently with the puke cleaned off it) and a pair of shorts. It's November. It's Buffalo. It's snowing. And then he starts to organize the event. He wants to collect passports as we get to the bridge to Canada. Keep in mind this is probably the fifth or sixth year we've done this trip, so we've got the routine down. My buddy Jay, who is about 6-5 and played D2 college basketball said "I'm not giving you my passport." "Why the fuck not, asshole?" "Fuck you." Then the Douche takes a swing Jay, who holds him off with one hand and says "Because you're Mike's brother-in-law, I'm not going to yank you out of this van and throw you in the lake. You're going to get out of the van on your own and go back to the hotel."
We didn't see the Douche after that. He apparently walked back to the hotel, then packed up his stuff and drove back to Ohio that night.

you've had a bad experience. everyone I know from ohio are solid midwesterners.
as for illinois, my take is that chicago and the caller counties are the midwest and everywhere else is redneck-ville. now, i realize that i am stigmatized on this board as a left-coast liberal, but i doubt many of them know where lawrence county is, where fat little baby boys are called "bubby" and all the big sisters and aunties mercilessly demand, "gimme some sugar, bubby" all the live long day, where tours of the refinery are de rigueur for all out of town guests (but since i had insider clout, i never had to do it). i have shopped at the IGA and bought candy at Ben Franklin on the square and i've even asked to be driven over to the candy shop in sumner, where they sell rock candy, so i know redneck-ville when i live in it, and those folk, as wonderful as they are, ain't midwesterners.

what'd greene do? i am pulling for the guy. i mean, i think there's a decent chance he'll turn out to be this season's bo hart, but other than that i'd like to see him in the line-up, and he has looked really good at times at 2B.
the problem with pulling the plug on theriot is that it makes the organization look bad, and this organization does not like to eat their own albatross. we'll watch guys like kip w3lls and adam kennedy get marched out there for months . . . years . . . after it is pretty clear that it ain't working out. but as long as they don't go all tino martinez and squawk, their position is fairly secure.

"what'd greene do?"
Nothing. I just don't think he's an everyday shortstop.

Good point, but if you move him to second base, you're only eating a wing or two, not the entire albatross.

Maybe they could move Jay to SS. (grin) (grin) (grin)

I think Greene is a good bench player. He can play all infield positions at a high level and is the threat to steal a base. I do agree he isnt an everyday player. I also think Punto has been pretty effective. A combo Greene and Punto at short and Theriot at second would be best. Skip has been out along time. If he is sluggish when he comes backs I dont think he should get the star treatment he has got in the past.

He last played short in 2008 in single A. He did so rather poorly. You can throw him in the position, like the Cardinals have done for one inning but if you do it often it will cost you.

"Good point, but if you move him to second base, you're only eating a wing or two, not the entire albatross."
well if they acquire a SS from outside the organization, then they simply claim this was the plan all along, and albatross is off the menu. but if they move theriot to 2B and promote a starting SS from within, aside from nibbling a bit of albatross wing, the team has too many 2B's. from the little i have seen, greene is best at 2B, and it would be nice to see just how much of an everyday player he can be. theriot has no hidden upside. greene has oodles of speed, a bit of power, and the rare ability to play 7 positions on defense.
i see both descalso and punto as the defensively talented multi-position back-ups that the cards need, but neither are starters, unless possibly if punto can keep his BA up around the .266 he is hitting now.
bottom line: we lucked out with some solid bench players in punto and descalso, but theriot was not the answer and we might be better off finding out if greene is (at 2B, most likely) before it is time for a midseason fix. it will be crucial to know if our greater need is SS or closer.

Hey now.
The Riot is scraptastic. Or is it scrapalicious? Scraptabulous?
Well, you know what I mean.
On a related note, has anyone else noticed that the team that gave up on The Riot is now starting the Lawn Gnome at 2B. If I had to choose, I'd take The Riot.
