Reds broadcaster calls Carp 'whiner,' Duncan 'infantile'

When I read the headline, I thought it was going to be a reference to Brennaman's mentally-retarded (for further details on the use of that term, see the political correctness thread) son saying during the broadcast on Sunday that Carpenter "complained incessantly" about the baseballs not being rubbed up, but then I presumed no one actually believes Thom Brennaman knows what the word "incessantly" means.

From Goold:

Cincinnati broadcaster Marty Brennaman threw more fuel on the Cardinals-Reds rivalry, referring to former Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter as “that whiner and excuse maker.â€
The broadcast booth discussion turned to Dave Duncan, who was referred to as “that infantile pitching coach.â€
(Speaking of infantile, WLW, the Reds rights holder, ran this contest: “Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has shingles, so we want to give you a chance to win some Tony La Russa shingles of your own! The Reds and Cards clash this weekend at GABP and we're backin' our redlegs by giving you a shot to win Tony La Russa shingles courtesy of Ray St. Clair roofing.† Stay classy Cincinnati!)
As for the Cardinals, the broadcaster mocked acting Cardinals manager Joe Pettini for supposedly having said “every time (we) come in here, it’s always something with that team.â€
In reality, Pettini was referring to past and current episodes between the teams when he said: "It's always something when you come in here."
(Like, for instance, Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto ending Jason LaRue’s career by kicking him in the head with his cleats. Apparently, Brennaman "misremembers" that assault.)

Re: Reds broadcaster calls Carp 'whiner,' Duncan 'infantile'

I dont see how the term "infantile" applies to Duncan at all.  I do however agree that Carp's ego/attitude/whinning is getting old.  He is really starting to rub me the wrong way.  In a game that so much attention is put in respect at times Carp can show very little.

As to Pettini comment it is clearly true.  Nothing happens in St. Louis.  They wait till they are in their city to act like a bunch of piss ants.

I don't disagree, and though I've not scoured the internet, I've yet to read a quote from Carpenter attributing his poor performance on Sunday to anything or anyone but himself. He may have indeed been upset by the condition of the mound in Cincinnati or having to wait for the smoke from the fireworks to clear, but I've not read or heard him say anything to that effect.
That the media affiliated with the Reds made those observations in order to continue to portray Carpenter as a villian doesn't necessarily make them true.

Re: Reds broadcaster calls Carp 'whiner,' Duncan 'infantile'

We would be portraying him as the same if he played against the Cardinals instead of for them.  He is a hot head on the field.  The most recent instance that annoyed me was when he barked at Hanley Ramirez for checking on Molina after another player slide into him.  Think about how we would react if Zambrano yelled at Berkaman after a hard slide at the plate.  We would like call him a nut or something.  The more Carp struggles the more he will get snippy.  I understand why he is upset most the time but he comes acrossed as an asshole.

Not untrue, but the revisionist historians in the Ohio media are making Carpenter out to be the "true instigator" of last year's brawl.

None of that happens if Phillips doesn't open his mouth and then taps Molina in his shinguards like they're best buddies. Carpenter never called out the Reds, and he certainly didn't kick anyone in the back or in the head while he was wearing spikes.

I am not blaming anyone but Phillips for that deal.  You dont call people bitches and then act suprised when they didnt like it.

Re: Reds broadcaster calls Carp 'whiner,' Duncan 'infantile'

From Bernie:

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter on Wednesday calmly offered some information in the aftermath of accusations (from a Reds broadcaster) that he whined and made excuses during and after Sunday's loss at The Great American Ball Park.
About that scene where Carpenter stepped away while the celebratory blast of smoke cleared from the ballpark following a Reds' homer?
And what about the Cincinnati grounds crew working on the pitching mound in the bottom of the first?
Carpenter says home-plate umpire Tim Welke, who worked Sunday's game, instructed him to wait until the smoke drifted away from the playing field. Carpenter is always impatient when he has to wait to resume pitching, so if Carpenter looked irritated out there, what do you expect? He's about as intense as it gets.
And in a brief discussion before Carpenter went to work, Welke told him to look at the mound. There had been rain in the Cincinnati area over the weekend and so things weren't in perfect shape. Carpenter said Welke told him to ask for assistance if the footing was a problem. And Carpenter did so. But he didn't squawk about it; he was following through on what Welke told him.
"I don't see what the big deal is," Carpenter said. "I never complained about anything or made an excuse. Welke wanted the smoke to clear because it was pretty thick. And he was aware of the mound and offered to get it taken care of to help both pitchers. That that was something to benefit both sides. The Reds' pitcher, too."
Excuses?
"I've got to make better pitches, improve on my command and hit my location," Carpenter said. "That's all there is to it."

Maybe that's how they spell "winner" in Pigtown.
