Nice job by Salas.
If those idiots wearing blue pajamas could do to the Reds what they did to the Marlins, St. Louis is up four games.

We go to KC and SD while the TTIB goes to Cleveland and Philly. Be nice to go on a bit of a roll.
BTW- the pitching only allowed 3 ER during the homestand. That helps a lot.

If the Cardinals would have taken at least a game from them it would be alot better too.

Pop quiz: Cardinals players hold the top 2 spots of BA in NL, Holliday followed by Berkman. The next highest Cardinal is tied with Todd Helton for 11-12th, with a BA of .323. What is the name this contender for the batting title?

Whoever suggested more frequent rest for him (AP? Max?) was spot on. And Laird hasn't been a dropoff of the Diaz/Bennett ilk offensively. He had a big hit today.

It wasn't me, although I repeatedly say we are lucky to have him for his D.

The desparate efforts to keep Frankiln on the roster are getting beyond stupid. They activated Tallet and sent out Hamilton. So they're going to KC with 13 pitchers (if you count Franklin) and a 2 person bench, assuming Berkman is unavailable. And one of those bench spots will be the backup catcher.
That's fucking assinine. Either DL or DFA Franklin. This team can't afford a charity roster spot.

not that i argue with the need for action on franklin, but maybe their reasoning was that franklin is at least as valuable as is hamilton. (depressed)

I can't argue that Hamilton has done anything, but they're going to an AL city where they're going to use a DH. Without Berkman, they're going to have 11 position players, one of whom didn't start today because of injury, one who missed the first 3 games of the homestand because of injury, a player who made his MLB debut yesterday, the backup catcher, etc...
They have no bench flexibility for this series unless Berkman suddenly becomes available which isn't likely, and they've put themselves in this position to hide a pitcher who can't pitch.

And they're using the DH in this series. Can Franklin hit better than he can pitch at this point?

Frankie has 2 hits in 21 major league at bats . I think he has pictures .

Has to be something really compromising, too. Like LaRussa eating a hot dog.
Anyone heard or read an update on Berkman? The only rerports I've seen claim he's day-to-day, but they're from this afternoon.

maybe they think Franklin can handle a bat better than Hamilton has thus far. or maybe they're thinking about moving Franklin to second base?

Damn you, Artie! I set the joke up, I want the punchline. You think I run a charity here??? There is no generosity among sarcastic bastards!

well, let's see here. hamilton has 5 in 29 ABs. maybe franklin's situational stats are better in light of the KC series?

Sorry, I'm so tired right now it just flew over my head. I *had* to stay up and watch the end of Brewers/Padres, because I wanted the Cards to pick up a game on Milwaukee tonight (they did), and now I might as well stay up and watch the Giants finish off the Dodgers in the ninth. The Extra Innings package breeds addiction. I probably need a week without baseball at Betty Ford.

I dont know if I suggested more rest to increase his effectiveness. I know I said I was sick of seeing him on the field. I think at one point last year I tried to debate that the Cardinals were a better team when Larue was behind the plate. that isnt a debate I could win but I was just sick of Yadi. I take all that back now. He isnt even the same ballplayer. He looks in shape. He is running and hitting well. Just off of memory he has been the second most clutch guy on the team, behind Berkman. At times he is lazy behind the plate but we all know he is the leagues best catcher. Now he is the games best hitting catcher.

I second that. I also knew this was coming. Of course it would have looked better if I would have said it yesterday. I actually thought that they wouldnt have made the last call up but I assume they feel they need the infield depth.

I knew that, and remembered it. But I wasn't going to speak for you on this issue.
I can't remember who, or if anybody from our group, suggested that Yadi get more rest. No wait, maybe it was Artie. (wink)

I cant remember the last game I watched when someone wasnt wearing birds on the bat.

So the offensive side of the roster looks like this
Theriot-ss
Jay-rf
Pujols-1b
Holliday-lf
Rasmus-cf
Craig-dh
Molina-c
Descalso-3b
Greene-2b
Liard-C
Kozma-2b/ss
Berkman-day to day
The only position player left is a guy that shouldnt even be on the roster. Even if Berkman can play they are still short handed.

It is interesting how the expanded role of the pitching staff, going from 4 to 5 starters, and the huge increase in the numbers of bullpen pitchers over the past decades has changed the game, such that managing the roster is almost like an NL manager's job of managing the pitcher's spot in the batting order.

"I cant remember the last game I watched when someone wasnt wearing birds on the bat."
I usually need to watch a couple of innings to unwind after the Cardinals' game. With yesterday's game in the afternoon, the hockey game took the place of the Cardinals.
I can't remember the last non-playoff American League game I watched.
