5/22 Gamecrap

A 6-1 lead with Garcia on the mound makes me about as comfortable as I'm ever going to get.

Re: 5/22 Gamecrap

And the TTIB is on the verge of losing five straight. Plus they have to go up against Cole Hamels tomorrow.

Re: 5/22 Gamecrap

What a ridiculous move. Pulling Garcia after 84 pitches so that Franklin and Batista can get some work in a game that is by no means decided? Sometimes La Russa just really pisses me off.

It's not like you could've forseen La Russa and Duncan exercising their Batista fetish.

It's a 4-game series in Philadelphia and they get every one in the rotation but Oswalt. That'll go well.

For the record, Campos completely overreacted. Unless Treanor said the magic word.

Holy crap. Not that this game is taking a long time to play, but I think it was the bottom of the fifth when I came home an hour and 15 minutes ago.

I havent watched the game but AL said that he was bitching about the strike zone as a hitter.  Maybe the ump just got sick of it.

The move to pull Garcia is the dumbest thing La Russa has done all season. Absolutely insane and it was done for the sole purpose of getting Batista some work in the sixth inning. They absolutely deserve to lose.

This is ridiculous. KC is going to win.

Re: 5/22 Gamecrap

OK.  So one way to the W stat a little bit less stupid to me would be if a starting pitcher qualifies for the win when he leaves the game, and the team wins, give him the W.  Why penalize Garcia because Batista, Tallet, and Sanchez let the game get away, and then reward Motte because the Royals pitching/defense fell apart in the 10th?  BB, E, HBP, OUT, BB, BB . . . W to Motte?!?

I didn't see any of his at bats, but I did see enough of the game to know Campos was calling a tight zone. There was a close pitch on a 3-ball count, I think to Rasmus, that could have gone either way, and Campos called it a ball. Treanor groused, but he didn't turn his head. Then Campos came around to the front of the plate and continued the argument, then went back to his position. Treanor kept arguing, with his mask on, and then Campos tossed him.

On a day when the ball is carrying against what would be a half-decent National League lineup. A 6-run lead in an American League park is not a 6-run lead against the Astros.

Re: 5/22 Gamecrap

Time for the Cardinals to make their move on the Reds.

They face Hamels, Halladay, Lee, Teheran, Lowe and Hudson next week.

Between now and July 4 (when Cincy comes to St. Louis) they will also play seven against the Dodgers, four at San Francisco, nine games against Tampa, New York and Toronto, then host the Indians. The Cardinals could bury the Reds.

Without having watched more then a couple innings I would have to agree with you.  I see Miller and Motte did there jobs today.  That is a good sign.

They could and in the past they have not.  However this team just feels like a team that is going to fight to do what they need to do to win.  Today is a good example of a time when teams in years past would have given up.

From July 4-Aug. 3, the only team the Cardinals play that is currently more than 2 games over .500 is the Reds.

Not a bad idea, but that might leave too much discretion in the hands of the official scorekeepers. The players already piss and moan about judgment calls on hits and errors costing them money at the bargaining table. Can you imagine pitchers grousing about wins getting taken away?

Re: 5/22 Gamecrap

I don't see how there's any judgement in it all.  If a starting pitcher leaves a game in line for the W, and the team wins, then the W goes to the starting pitcher.

Part of the issue is that pitcher Ws already count for so much when it comes to awards, and then money.  And whether you say that W's already are getting taken away, or that the system to award pitcher Ws is imperfect at best, is really just an opinion.  Garcia could easily be 7-0 right now, and be an early favorite for the Cy Young Award.  Last year it was even worse.  If not for the awards and money, it wouldn't really matter, but that's one of those, 'if my aunt had balls' ifs.

Using that standard, a pitcher with a 1 run lead could load the bases, yield the game to the bullpen, have the team fall behind, then rally and the starter gets the win. That makes no sense.

Perhaps Garcia wouldn't have been "penalized" if he hadn't started off the 6th by giving up 2 runs.

If you only pitch 5 innings, you run the risk the bullpen falters. If the bullpen had done their job, Garcia gets the win despite the fact that the bullpen pitched 4 of the 9 innings. Sometimes it works to the pitchers advantage and sometime it doesn't. I'm sure over time it evens out.

Devil's advocate here, but say Garcia (using him for illustration purposes only) leaves after five with, say, a 7-5 lead. He hasn't pitched well, but he's in line for the win. Batista comes in for the sixth and coughs up two runs, taking Garcia out of the mix for the decision. Then Motte, Sanchez and Salas throw one scoreless inning each (I know, I know. But remember, this is theoretical), and the Cardinals scratch out a run in the bottom of the ninth to win, 8-7.
I suppose there's something to be said for Garcia holding onto a lead, but I think the overall point you've been trying to make all along is the guy who pitches the best in any given game ought to be rewarded with the win. I'm not sure how you go about that in every situation.

I'll have to go back and check the box score, but I thought he gave up a leadoff homer to Franceour in the sixth and was taken out.
The run the Royals scored in the fifth was hardly his fault. Greene (who had been inserted for defensive purposes) lost a ball in the sun with two outs and a runner on third.
That saved Jay from getting the daily dufus award for making the first out of the eighth inning at third base.
