Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

The good thing about having players like Berkman, Holliday and Pujols on the roster is that even when they are not hitting the ball xtremly well they are still good enough to do the little things like fly out to center for a sac fly.

Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

Big escape by Carpenter. After that disaster of a home stand, they need a big road trip.

Big outing by Carpenter. Hopefully Garcia finishes the sweep tomorrow.

I'm thrilled they won, and kudos to Carp for a courageous performance, but if they keep rolling him out there for these 120-130 pitch outings, his arm is going to fall off by August.
Someone's got to be the turd in the punch bowl. Sorry.

Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

Other observations:
Theriot doesn't make the play Punto made to end the third inning. He saved a run that would have made the score 4-2. Might be a different ballgame.
Yadi got about a half-dozen pitches to hit and did nothing with them.
Looks like Hamilton is one of those quintessential low-ball left-handed hitters. The pitch he hit for a single in the fourth was practically in the dirt. At least you folks don't have to read about me whining he hasn't hit the ball hard yet, though.
I would make it a practice to replace Holliday for defense, but only when there are two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Good things happening in Toronto and the Bronx tonight. The Cardinals could board the plane for Tampa tomorrow night tied for first place.

Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

I don't suppose the Cardinals have another Monday off, Monday being the 4th of July. The extra day off would be helpful.

First game of a 3-game series with TTTIB.
Their days off in July are Thursday the 14th, after the AS break, which is silly, and Monday the 18th.

I read about that in the PD and my gut reaction was that this would be one of those La Russa-ian moves that backfires.  I am expecting Garcia to implode.

What led you to that conclusion?

btw: somebody imbedded the video in a fan comment here,

and it's pretty clear from this angle that the ball did, indeed, hit him in the nuts.

"I am expecting Garcia to implode."

Gary Thorne made an interesting comment about the switch from Westbrook to Garcia. Something like "LaRussa couldn't leave town without starting a lefty." Without looking it up, I'm guessing the Orioles have seen enough of left-handed pitching this year, which doesn't make sense because their 3-4-5 guys are all right-handed hitters.

Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

Actually, the explanation I read was that Garcia was moved up so that he could make an additional start before the All-Star Break.  Tonight's starter pitches again on Tuesday (7/5) and then again on Sunday (7/10).  So long as he isn't forcing the issue by making Garcia start on short rest, it makes sense to get him an extra start rather than Westbrook.

Re: 6/29 Gamecrap

I was hoping the Cardinals could take Jeremy Guthrie and leave Jake Westbrook behind, but Guthrie doesn't throw enough ground balls for Duncan's liking.

I didn't hear that explanation from Gary Thorne. But I'm all for Garcia getting more starts than Westbrook.
Even though we got both versions of the game last night, EI loves the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, or whatever it's called. Whether it's the Nationals or the Orioles, they'll always take the MASN feed as their first option.
And as fussy as Jim Palmer is, it's clear he did some research about the Cardinals before the series started. Thorne's tack has been one of assuming every Orioles' fan discovered there is a major league baseball team in St. Louis at 6:59 p.m. on Tuesday. "Hey, this Ton-y La-Rus-sa fella has been managing for a looooong time ..."

PD says all this: "Garcia has allowed three earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts since suffering his first loss of the season on May 28 in Colorado.
The switch also gives Garcia an additional start before the All-Star break. Westbrook was originally scheduled to make the July 10 appearance at Busch Stadium against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Garcia, who will work on regular rest due to Monday's off day, sports a better line pitching on four days' rather than five days' rest this season. He owns a 2.70 ERA in seven starts on standard rest and a 3.97 ERA in eight starts this season with five days between starts."

I just have a gut feeling this isn't going to work out, part of that is surely influenced by the difference in Garcia's home and away ERA: 0.88 to 5.36!  His day vs. night split isn't great, either: 2.51 to 3.33.

Heh. He's basically a league-average and then some pitcher who I think would do very well in a NL park, but mostly I like him because he reminds me of the savvy acquisitions Jocketty used to make.

They're on the road tomorrow as well.

"the difference in Garcia's home and away ERA: 0.88 to 5.36!"

I'm no pitching coach, but his evil 2-seamer that breaks down and away from righties seems to have a lot less movement when he's pitching on the road.

Well, I wasn't saying it was a bad idea, or that I might not have made the same move.  I was just saying I had a gut feeling that it would backfire.  What are the "reasons" for a gut feeling?

In any case, 5 ER in 5.1 IP is pretty close to implosion.  Thankfully the offense came alive.
