Goold addresses pitcher wins and quality starts

This piece looks at Carpenter's performance, and in the process addresses two issues we have debated here:

1. the value of the stat 'pitcher wins'

2. the value of the stat 'quality starts'

An interesting stat that comes out of this (although you need to do a bit of math to get there) is that starting pitchers this season (I guess he means right here, right now) have only won 52.3% of those "quality starts", reinforcing the argument that the stat is poorly named or improperly defined.

Re: Goold addresses pitcher wins and quality starts

I tried to read that story and got a popsicle headache. So thanks for that.
Bill Parcells used to say "You are what you are" when reporters would ask him about records and such. Should Carpenter's record be better than 3-7? Sure. But it's not.
I reject Goold's assertion that a "Gibby start" involves allowing three runs or less in seven innings. Gibby would have considered anything less than a complete game as a bad day.
And as admirably as Chris Carpenter has performed in a Cardinals' uniform, there's only one Bob Gibson. And there ain't gonna be another.
