We got a chance here!

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

Why Hamilton? If you go with Punto, you can double switch Schumaker out of the game.

Holy crap that was exciting.

Mark Hamilton may not be a god, but it still counts as an RBI.

There's no way Rolen should have made that play as close as it was. He's the best defensive 3B I've ever seen.

His arm is still s'in sick. There's no way he's supposed to make that play and not at least 1 hop that throw to first.

I got stuck with a day of painting my daughter' room and bathroom. Looks like I missed a helluva pitching duel.

Ballgame.

One of the better games I've seen in awhile.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

You also missed an unbelievable performance by Rasmus. Two absolutely dazzling singles, a heads-up play to get to third base for Hamilton and the game-winning run. The kid just competes.

Outfield defense was good tonight, too. All three guys.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

I walked in as Schumaker hit the fly ball that moved Colby to third.  The DVR has an hour stored, so I'm watching it back from the 7th.

I love my children, but the next time they ask to help with a task like painting a room, I'm going to suggest that they go play video games.  They mean well, but it doesn't necessarily work out that way.

It's hard when they have the best of intentions. Last summer, Zach decided he wanted to help with the lawn. We have two mowers, so it seemed simple enough - he takes one, I take one, and we meet in the middle, right? But between checking in on him to make sure he recognizes when the bag is full of clippings, helping him empty the bag when it's full of clippings, and then going over the spots he missed, it was taking me a half-hour longer for the two of us to mow the lawn than it took me by myself.
This spring, I'd just mow the lawn when he was at lacrosse practice.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

miscellany:

Goofy slide to first by Hamilton.  PD says he was already changing his run to round first for second, when he had to change plans because of Rolen's play at third.

If Pujols doesn't get injured, Berkman plays right field today and doesn't make that catch that Bruce nearly put over the wall, and the outcome of today's game could have been different.

119 pitches for Carpenter.

It's supposed to take longer to do things when you start teaching your kids, but the idea is that if you teach them well they can do it themselves and save you a lot of time.  That should work for routine tasks like the lawn, but I'm not as confident when it comes to rarely performed tasks like painting.

That was my thoughts.  Even as he ages there isnt a third baseman in the league that could have done that.  I know I am in the wrong generation of third baseman.  It is a power position now and the glove comes second.  However I dont think I have seen anyone as good as he is as making the play and the throw going to his right.

Cueto is a piece of trash but he isnt a bad pitcher.  This was a good 0-1 ballgame unlike some of the ones we have seen in previous years when two crappy pitcher pair up for a 4 hour offensive snooze fest.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

Twenty-eight of Carp's 116 pitches were to Votto. That dickhole ruined a complete game.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

I agree on the goofy slide and see the PD's point.  He was really far on the outside part of the baseline.  I didnt really think of the him seeing the hit as a double off the bat but if Rolen wasnt super human it would have been.

Brooks Robinson is the standard for anyone who's been around long enough. I'm too young to remember Robinson in his prime, but Mags always used to say Rolen is better.
Mike Schmidt won a ton of Gold Gloves, but Ken Reitz was a better defensive third baseman. He just didn't have Schmidt's name recognition and offensive numbers.
Graig Nettles was excellent, especially going to his left. His reflexes were the best I've ever seen. He would have made a good hockey goalie.
And Eric Chavez may have been as good or better than any of those guys. He just couldn't stay healthy after awhile.

I have no idea what Hamilton was thinking, other than "Oh, shit. I need to get to first base" once he saw Rolen come up with the ball. Off the bat, it looked like a harder hit than it was, but with all that spin, it probably wasn't going to get too far past Rolen.
Hey, he put the bat on the ball, beat it out and drove in the only run of the game. The kid cares and he plays hard. There are worse guys to have on a team.

Re: 7/4 Gamecrap

Going to chime in on Phillips.

Yes, I hate him.
Yes, I hate him for what he's said about St. Louis.

With that in mind, I've watched two mega-stars in St. Louis, and countless celebrities that were stand-offish and assholes to the public at large, but charitable and giving to the less fortunate and the children. The two big names are Albert Pujols and Mark McGwire. Larussa is another celeb. They haven't talked mad shit about another city and that is what drives me hating Phillips, but I won't go so far as to say that Phillips is a self-serving shithead with nobody else on his mind but himself. I reserve that for Milton Bradley, and a few others like him. Phillips is one of those guys who likes to talk shit. He's good, and actually plays better when he's emotionally involved, so he gets emotionally involved. It's a fucking annoyance if you have to play against the son of a bitch, because the only thing worse then losing to a rival, is having them talk shit every out along the way.

Still though, keep it in perspective. He's not a douche to everyone, just St. Louis. He's actually a good community guy if you're community isn't St. Louis.
