Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

"I've heard some speculation that if we get a starter, McClellan goes to the bullpen," La Russa said moments after fielding questions on his Sunday call-in show. "That is inaccurate."

So . . .

a) McClellan will be the one traded?
b) One of the other starters will be the one traded?
c) One of the other starters will be the one demoted? [Westbrook pitching the 8th???]
d) "if we get a starter, McClellan might go to the bullpen"

leaning toward d, but I'd like to ask the audience.

Re: Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

Westbrook has been the weakest link so far.  It make little sence to make a move that ships off one of the top three pitchers (Carp, Loshe or Garcia).  I could see a mix an match approach as far as applying McCellan and Westbrook to the rotation if they add another pitcher.

Re: Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

At least from what I've read, the idea behind getting a starter is to strengthen the bullpen.  If you trade starter for starter, that doesn't offer a solution, so I'd rule out a or b.

I don't know if Westbrook has ever pitched out of the bullpen, and I'm not sure why they would think it a very good idea.  Without looking, I seem to remember the last game opened with a lead off home run and the start before began with 5 batters, 5 runs.  That's not exactly hitting the ground running.

I suspect this is just Tone being Tone.  If they get a starter, the guy who pitched effectively in the bullpen the last 3 season returns to the bullpen.

Mega-dittoes. TLR gets to rattle his sword on behalf of one of his guys, who will earn some serious LaRussa Bucks (if this board has accomplished anything, it's TK's introduction of that term) when he moves back to the bullpen.
My answer is D).

Re: Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

With Sanchez gone McCellan would really help the bullpen.  It all really depends on who the pitcher is.  It has to be a top rotation guy to really make a difference.  I am still really interested in Erik Bedard.  Not really as the guy but one of the guys the Cardinals get at the deadline.  He can be a top of the rotation pitcher.  He is high risk for injury but his current trip to the DL has nothing to do with his arm or shoulder.  The rest might actually make him a better person to trade for.  Also he doesnt cost the Cardinals much money at all and shouldnt cost them but one average prospect.

If you are right about Bedard being somewhat healthy then I can totally imagine the Cards trying to put together a deal for Bedard and Wilson, and my first guess is that would require either Rasmus, or several of the Jay, Craig, Sanchez/Salas, type of players.  Sanchez probably saved his future in a Cardinals uniform by getting injured, though.

Re: Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

That's way too big of a package for Bedard, who is never healthy and will be a free agent this winter. If Seattle asks for anyone of significance, the Cardinals would hang up on them and justifiably so.

Bedard is of no use to them.  They will take anyone.  Anyone I could name off the top of my head would likely be off limits in that deal.  I might let them have Pete Kozma.

Re: Deciphering the Oracle at Delphi

Good points about Bedard.  I haven't been following closely enough.  I stand corrected.
