The Cards did win some Central Division titles, but the the General Manager wasn't Mozeliak it was, surprise, the Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty.

Mags, I now have a strong rooting interest in the SEC. I am 100 percent for Arkansas now that Bobby Petrino from Helena, MT, and his brother Paul (sound familiar) is the Offensive Coordinator. They are the sons of Bobby Petrino Sr. from Butte, MT who won several NAIA Championships at Carroll College in Helena, MT where both his sons played quarterback. Paul is also married to the daughter of a good friend of ours from Helena.

There is also the story from the third place game in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. When West Germany defeated England, one of the German reporters stood up and said "We have beaten the English at their own game!" An Engliish reporter stood up and replied "Yes, but we defeated you at "your" own game twice."

After the Rockies beat up on us in July it has been a real pleasure to see the Cards take three from them the past three days! The Rockies TV announcers were praising Jimenez and bad mouthing Lohse from the beginning. I wish Lohse could have gotten the W.

Boyer had an important, maybe crucial role in that 1964 Pennant. The first great ML catch I ever saw was by him against the Cubs at Wrigley in 1956 (a line drive with "Vinegar Bend" on the mound).

Excellent article on the relationship between success on the field and payroll Mags. Also, I very much enjoyed the piece on one of my favorites from the 50s and 60s, Ken Boyer.

At the moment Carpenter remains the best starter on the Cardinals if not the National League, Wainright is still top three or four with decent backup in the field and at bat, Garcia has had a fine season as a rookie. Thats where the starting pitching ends. They have tried a busted wing and a prayer with Lohse and Supan, and Penny was never in the mix. We have run through several other 4th and 5th starters on the hope that "somebody can play this game," but they have either not been ready or not up to the task. We have one exceptional offensive player in Pujols, Holliday and Rasmus can swing the bat, and Yadi chimes in occsionally, but his great value is his handling of pitchers, great arm, and exceptional defense. The rest of the position player are mediocre to awful offensively, and average or less defensively. Freese's injury hurt, but though he played well for the short time he was healthy he has yet to prove himself over a long season. The bullpen has some decent talent, but is inconsistant, Franklin may be a nice guy, but he is not a closer. It is amazing that these guys hung in the race so long, and speaks to the quality of the Central Division. The talent in the NL is not great this year. I see the Phillies as the class of a mediocre group, Atlanta's no names seem to have some talent, and I like the Giants in the West. The Pads and Rockies aren't going to play with the good or great teams of the NL past. I have always had mixed feelings about Larussa, and his job this year just reflects my ambivelance. Moz does what Dewitt wants, and Dewitt doesn't want to spend money. I suppose he is saving up to sign "the drawing card" Pujols, but meanwhile, and for the forseeable future we are looking at spending the playoffs watching the NFL and NCAA football ( Go U. of Montana Grizzlies), and getting ready for the NHL (Rangers!), and NBA Seasons. Oh well the Hamilton Tiger Cats are tied for second in the CFL East, and the Newcastle United Magpies are back in the Premier

A part time fan is one who follows a team in another division who you are for when their wins either dont hurt, or help the Cardinals.

Denver Post devoted 5 pages to the mediocre Broncos loss to the mediocre Jaguars. Kansas City (not to be confused with K.C.) deserved their win over the Chargers. Their special teams and defense played well. I don't remember if their offense got into the game.
