Lynn vs. Richard
Offline
Thirteen pitches to put away someone named Carlos Asuamujay ...

Two HBP, including the pitcher, a seeing eye single and a double. I wonder if Lynn stared at the eclipse too long yesterday.

Lynn goes back to hitting from the right side for an obvious bunt situation, when launch angle isn't as much of a factor.

If like to turn on the game but we are stuggling through second grade reading, female melt downs and my own disgruntledness....

Sorry, if you're a pitcher and you're wearing #3, you'd better be a whole lot better than Clayton Richard.

You're not missing much, unless you want to see Lynn laboring against a triple A lineup.

McLaughlin ought to play the lottery after that bit of clairvoyance.

Edmonds: "Home runs are awesome for a team that's in the hunt."
He's not the best color man in the league for nothing, folks!

Maybe pitch around Solarte next time? Just a suggestion ....

He is our staff ace

I'm trying to be kind because he's been the best starter on the team, but he seems distracted tonight.

Another awesome home run.

This just in: The Reds' bullpen coughed up a lead ...

Why does Matheny leave Duke in to face right-handed hitters?

I was more troubled by his decision to bring in Bowman at all.
Despite his blunt spokeness, Al is very restrained about his criticism of Matheny. One thing he as said that I've come to appreciate more and more as a valid criticism of Matheny is the statement, "If you are afraid to use him, he shouldn't be in on your roster." I just don't understand why managers, and Matheny is a serious offender in this regard, tend to overuse one reliever while letting others get stale in the pen.

To me, warming up and sitting down, then warming up and sitting again takes more of a toll on an arm than actually being used in a game 4-5 times a week. With La Russa, you knew if you got up, you were getting in, unless there was some kind of bizarre circumstance - say, the Cardinals scoring eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a 1-run game.

You have a very short memory. Matheny may or may not be worse than LaRussa. But I can recall those complaints being made about LaRussa. The most famous one was in a game that I believe was nationally televised. Steve Kline had been warming up with expectations of coming in. Then the pitcher already in the game was sent out to pitch the next inning. Kline flashed LaRussa the bird, which TLR didn't see but the t.v. camera did. LaRussa supposedly found out about it after the game and had a confrontation with Kline while the latter was taking a shower, or so it was reported.

I remember that. And I remember he regretted leaving St. Louis about two minutes after he signed with Baltimore.

The costs of having relievers warm up without being used has become much more of issue today than it was 30 years ago. The reason, I'm sure, is because relievers are used so much more and earlier in the game today than they once were.I can recall the days when it was common practice for managers like Whitey to nearly always have 1 lefty and 1 righty warming up at the same time.
BTW, did you hear Edmonds say something last night about "now that the ball is being juiced again"?

I'm sure you're right about the first part. As for the second, I didn't hear him say that last night, but he wouldn't be the first. I can't remember who it was, maybe Smoltz, who said early in the season he was surprised at how much harder the ball seems this year.
