To me, warming up and sitting down, then warming up and sitting again takes more of a toll on an arm than actually being used in a game 4-5 times a week. With La Russa, you knew if you got up, you were getting in, unless there was some kind of bizarre circumstance - say, the Cardinals scoring eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a 1-run game.

You have a very short memory.  Matheny may or may not be worse than LaRussa.  But I can recall those complaints being made about LaRussa.  The most famous one was in a game that I believe was nationally televised.  Steve Kline had been warming up with expectations of coming in.  Then the pitcher already in the game was sent out to pitch the next inning.  Kline flashed LaRussa the bird, which TLR didn't see but the t.v. camera did.  LaRussa supposedly found out about it after the game and had a confrontation with Kline while the latter was taking a shower, or so it was reported.

 

I remember that. And I remember he regretted leaving St. Louis about two minutes after he signed with Baltimore.

I'm sure you're right about the first part. As for the second, I didn't hear him say that last night, but he wouldn't be the first. I can't remember who it was, maybe Smoltz, who said early in the season he was surprised at how much harder the ball seems this year.
